Creed 3 reached a milestone in just a few weeks after its worldwide premiere. Not only it became the highest opening debut in the entire sports movie genre, but it also zoomed past the total gross of its prequels.

In a report from Collider, the third Creed film earned $127.7 million in just three weeks. As of this writing, it has now crossed the $200 million mark, and it keeps churning money at the box office as the days roll in. In fact, it has now surpassed 2018’s Creed 2, which made $214.2 million.

Creed 3 renders a brand-new take on the movie’s protagonist, Adonis Creed, who leads a new life after a successful career in boxing. His life turns upside down when his former best friend turned rival Damian Anderson is released from prison and exacts his revenge.

Jordan’s idea for the movie is inspired by his love for Japanese anime, as he fondly recalls in his interviews taking inspiration from the likes of Naruto Shippuden, Dragon Ball Z, and My Hero Academia.

This gives a challenging yet fresh hold on the characters as the actors try to explore the good, the bad, and the in-between. So much depth is put into the characters’ personalities, as Jordan reiterated in his past statement via Total Film:

It was really important to me that we see the emotional journeys of both Donnie and Damian in those scenes, and anime definitely played a part with that inspiration.”

Fans insatiably love Jordan’s first-ever movie project, which also gives a hint that the franchise might also expand and build its own Creed universe.

What Fans Could Expect From The Creed Universe

Michael B. Jordan has previously expressed interest in taking some parts of the film and creating a different narrative, which gave birth to the rumors that the actor-director spoke with Amazon to discuss potential spin-off projects.

‘Drago’ spin-off is reportedly in the works

This carries a new torch for the franchise as rumor has it that a Drago spin-off film is currently in the works. Penned by Robert Lawton, it would feature Russian boxer Ivan Drago and his son, Viktor Drago, who was introduced in Creed 3. It is still unclear whether the project will be helmed for television or theater; regardless, a script has been commissioned.

There is also a prospect for a live-action and even an animated film, but these are still just ideas for the expansion of the Creed universe. Jordan told Deadline:

Building the Creed universe is something that I’m really excited about.”

In reality, it is not an impossible dream. The Creed franchise has been bringing a lot of wins for both Amazon and MGM. With fans showing their love and support, more projects are expected to take shape in the next few years.

Creed 3 is now showing in theaters worldwide.
