When it comes to modern cinema, superheroes are all the rage, and despite the popularity starting to wane a little, comic book films are still one of the biggest blockbusters for the film industry. Conquering this space is James Gunn, who left his mark on the MCU with the Guardians of the Galaxy series before taking the reins of DC Studios.

While he may have become the face of the upcoming DCU, the legacy that he left behind with the MCU will forever remain untarnished. Fans revere the greatness of these projects, and so do other filmmakers, including director Michael Mann, who says he loved the GOTG series but did not like the last film, which may have upset the fans.

With the release of the first film in the Guardians of the Galaxy series in the MCU, filmmaker James Gunn proved why he was such a unique and distinguished individual when it came to a vision for superheroes when it came to comic book films. With the last film of the series, he raised the bar for future projects of superhero cinema.

And despite the last film also being one of the most emotionally impactful offerings from the cinematic juggernaut, it seems it failed to appease Michael Mann.

In a recent interview with The Playlist, the Miami Vice director opened up about how he doesn’t want to be involved in a superhero film in his career but doesn’t seem to despise them either. In fact, the legendary filmmaker revealed that he’s a big fan of the Guardians of the Galaxy series as he feels it was just a culmination of an amazing premise and superb execution by Gunn. He said:

“On the other hand, I think that Guardians of the Galaxy, for example, not necessarily this last one, but the two before, have really worked and I love watching them. And the reason they work is because they have a really, really well done story structure behind them. So it’s exciting in the sense of being able to expand into myth that way and to create myth. I think that’s a very exciting medium.”

Here, we can see Mann saying that despite the series being his favorite superhero film, he didn’t like the last one, which is kind of jarring since the last film was a sentimental homage to Rocket Racoon.

Seeing as how the film brought an amazing antagonist as well as the emotional past of Rocket to the center of the series, the disappointment in the eyes of the fans by the filmmaker’s words is justified.
