Back when Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. first started, events of the MCU were often referenced in the show, with Nick Fury even making a cameo appearance at the end of the first season. But as the show continued, it started to drift away from the main universe and by the time the seventh season concluded, it became a standalone narrative that had nothing to do with the MCU.

Following her portrayal of Agent Melinda May in the first Marvel show produced by the now-defunct Marvel Television, Ming-Na Wen became an instant fan favorite. But unlike some of Marvel’s Netflix television series, which are now being incorporated into the larger MCU, it doesn’t seem the same is going to happen with Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., at least not anytime soon.

Speaking with Katee Sackhoff, the Mulan star expressed her dismay towards this treatment of the Marvel show. Considering Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. started the trend of Marvel superhero shows in the first place, she stressed it deserves more credit than it’s given.

She said:

“it’s weird, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. sort of became a separate entity for whatever reason because it was on the network as opposed to streaming,” she said. “We were the first, so you think we should get some accolade for helping launch Marvel in what the TV [department] that it is now.”

When asked if she had been contacted by Disney to reprise the role of Agent Melinda May in the MCU, Wen answered “No”.

Chances for More Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Isn’t Completely Over

Although it’s unlikely that Disney will revive the Marvel show anytime soon, the chances aren’t zero. When Brad Winderbaum, Marvel’s Head of Television, Animation, and Streaming, was asked about the possibility of AOS season 8, he didn’t completely shut down the possibilities.

He told Agents of Fandom:

“We’re doing that right now. We’re in production on Daredevil: Born Again in New York, they’re shooting as we speak — I’m seeing text messages come up from set. That’s probably the next show that is going to kind of revisit and revive a really strong, and one of my favorite pockets of our universe and our fandom. And… you never know, is the answer!”

While AOS‘ future remains up in the air, keeping in mind that multiverse has been a thing for quite some time now, fans will hope Ming-Na Wen returns in some capacity in her Marvel role.
