The next big title in the NetherRealm Studios Mortal Kombat franchise, Mortal Kombat 1, is getting a lot of hype as fans speculate that two favorite characters will return. As with every Mortal Kombat game, there is usually a lot of attention surrounding who will be joining the roster, with rumors and some developer reveals creating heightened levels of anticipation. Although there is no confirmation for Rain and Reptile, mysterious tweets from creative director, Ed Boon, and community manager for Warner Bros. Games, Cory Taylor, hint to as much.

How Did the Mortal Kombat 1 Rumors Come To Be and What Do They Mean?

Mortal Kombat 1 developers are hinting that Reptile and Rain could return.

In a post from Ed Boon’s Twitter account, @noobde, he stated: “…the phone rings. It’s Vicky calling…” This has led fans to believe it is a clue for the character Rain. Apparently, there is a song by Prince called “Vicki Waiting,” and observers speculate this is a nod to the fact Rain was inspired by the musical artist. Rain’s colors and his name were both created in reference to Prince’s most famous song, “Purple Rain.”

On the Warner Bros. side, Cory Taylor replied to a Mortal Kombat 1 post on his Twitter account, @ThalionFTW, saying: “…and it’s gonna melt faces.” This was in response to another tweet by Ed Boon which said: “We got another great game-play trailer koming soon with more MAIN & KAMEO fighter reveals.” This interaction is what has inspired many fans to believe Reptile will be returning to the franchise, due to his acid-spit ability. This power has been known to be not so kind to the face and other parts of an enemy combatant. Reptile has also been a character fans are begging to see return, so this may be a logical jump for the developers at NetherRealm Studios.

Mortal Kombat 1 is going to be a complete reset of the franchise continuity, which is largely being celebrated by fans who want a complete story that does not require extreme back tracking to understand. It will be the perfect time for those at NetherRealm Studios to bring back old characters and integrate new ones, as they are essentially creating a tabula rasa title to start fresh. If Reptile and Rain do show back up in this game, it could be on the main roster. However, even if they are not in the base game, fans should not lose hope, as there is always the possibility for them to arrive in DLC form.

Mortal Kombat 1 arrives on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X/S on September 19, 2023. It will be the 12th installment into the franchise and the first time the series has done a complete reset.
