Whether you’re a fan of Xbox and its achievement system, a PlayStation fan platinuming all your favorite games, or an avid Steam user, it seems that everyone, no matter the system, is a fan of getting these notifications.

The only system missing out on this seems to be the Nintendo Switch – until now apparently.

Trouble For The Mortal Kombat 1 Nintendo Switch Port

The steam achievement system for Mortal Kombat 1 has become notorious.
The steam achievement system for Mortal Kombat 1 has become notorious.

As is to be expected, gamers have gotten used to accepting ports with lower graphics when playing on the Nintendo Switch, and this hasn’t changed with Mortal Kombat 1.

The highly anticipated sequel to Mortal Kombat 11 and the second reboot from NetherRealm Studios hasn’t been met with much applause for the handheld device.

The series creator and director, Ed Boon, even mentioned how this version will be getting an upgrade in the future, due to the backlash by both Mortal Kombat and Nintendo Switch fans.

If this isn’t enough for NetherRealm and Nintendo, it now seems the companies are using Steam to showcase this game for the Nintendo Switch.

On the Nintendo Official YouTube channel, a video showcasing the trailer for Mortal Kombat was posted and quickly set to private, as it shows a Steam achievement pop-up at the 1:52 mark.

Now, this doesn’t seem like a big deal at first, until you realize this video was supposed to be a trailer for the Switch port.

Using a different system to showcase your game is not only dishonest, but also wrong on many levels. When you watch a video showcasing a game on a certain system, you expect the video to be shown on that console.

The History of False Advertising In Game Trailers

Like Mortal Kombat 1, No Man's Sky built a lot of hype with its trailer before disappointing fans.
Like Mortal Kombat 1, No Man’s Sky built a lot of hype with its trailer before disappointing fans.

This isn’t the first case of game trailers showing one thing and promising another. A perfect example would be the 2016 game created by Hello Games, No Man’s Sky.

When the trailer launched, the hype for this game was next level – until the actual game released. The trailer promised tons of things for the game’s launch – but fans were quick to learn that many components of what made the game seem excitable – were missing.

Planetary physics, sand planets, large fleets, and many other things were missing from the trailer. Hello Games has updated the game numerous times to include these features, but this is again an instance of how trailers for games can be very misleading.

What can be done to stop these misleading trailers in the future? First, studios should not pull what Nintendo did and showcase how a game performs on a different system.

Second, the game need to be in a state where it can be shown in a trailer, and don’t promise features unless they can be included at launch.

It’s a simple job – make sure your game is ready for a trailer before you show it. The truth is that many game trailers can be misleading, as they’re released before the actual game is ready to be played.

But there must be some accountability to make sure the game developers and studios are not promising one thing, and delivering another.

Luckily, it seems Nintendo realized its mistake by privatizing their video and Ed Boon’s promise of releasing an update to appease the fans is promising. So, the future is hopeful for people who are both a fan of the Nintendo Switch and the Mortal Kombat franchise.
