Several other directors have experienced similar treatment in Hollywood, and it would seem that Villeneuve has a special place in his heart for one of them. Recently, the director was asked about his favorite director, and his answer might shock many.

Who is Denis Villeneuve’s Favorite Director?

When it comes to Hollywood, there are several directors who are frequently talked about as some of the greatest. Among them, Martin Scorsese has been given the highest regard. He has been labeled as one of the greatest directors of all time by many, and there is no denying that his talent knows no bounds. Despite this, when Denis Villeneuve was asked about his favorite director, his answer was not the Killers of the Flower Moon director.

Villeneuve recently gave an interview with Empire, where he went into great detail about his professional and personal life. He also talked about the people he looked up to the most to become the artist that he is today, and interestingly enough, he named Christopher Nolan among them.

Chris Marker, Rod Serling, Tarkovsky, Kubrick… Christopher Nolan belongs to this group of artists: the time explorers, the inventors, the magicians, those who dream more deeply,

He grouped the Oppenheimer director with some of the most respected creators, composers, and artists of all time, pulling him from the specific category of a director and naming him as one of the greatest creators of all time. Coming from Villeneuve, this is not a small compliment.

Christopher Nolan—The Master Creator

Denis Villeneuve then went on to talk about Christopher Nolan’s films, specifically mentioning the amount of skill his movies take to be made. Nolan’s movies have a reputation for being well-thought-out in every aspect. Since there are several science-fiction themes in whatever he makes and he does not use any CGI, the amount of thought that goes into what he makes is truly spectacular.

Villeneuve spoke on exactly this, mentioning how the thought he puts into his work, mixed with the visions he has for his films, is the reason why he believes Nolan is one of the most talented people of all time.

Chris’ technical ambitions and mastery, combined with his impressive ability to transform abstract concepts into compelling dramatic journeys, make him a unique artist and easily one of the most exciting filmmakers working today. Movie after movie, he keeps fascinating me.

The uniqueness of his craft seems to have always intrigued Villeneuve. The director finished by saying that Nolan keeps all of his films fresh, unique, and so different from his past work that one is simply always engaged with what he is putting out for the world.
