Since the release of Death Note in 2006, fans have debated whether Light Yagami was the good guy and or was he the bad guy in the series. The series showed a student, who gets control of one of the biggest powers in the world: “the ability to grant death to anyone he wants” and how he uses it and later is deemed the bad guy for killing people.
Fans believed that he was not a villain, but instead an anti-hero because although his methods were wrong, his intentions and the reason behind those actions were good. This moral conflict was also seen when Thanos used the power of infinity stones to wipe out half of the universe to bring balance to the world. Just like Light, Thanos wanted to make a world where everyone could live in peace and have an equal distribution of resources so the world could survive.
One fan theory also supports this notion that Light may have been the villain of Death Note, but he was not exactly wrong. Light’s action according to this theory is justified because of his intention and how the world has become a cruel place, and though his actions were difficult to comprehend they had good reason behind it.
Light Yagami Was an Anti-Hero in Death Note
In the world of anime, one of the biggest arguments is whether Light was a noble antihero or a madman. Supporters have made claims such as that because he has good intentions and is superior to everyone else in intelligence and skill, he is truly an antihero and should be rewarded for defeating the police, who are incapable of carrying out their duties properly!
Light is shown as an extremely intelligent but bored young man who is confident in his sense of logic right from the start of the series. The injustice that exists in the world irritates him. Because he thinks the world is rotten he wants a way to execute his desire to rid the world of all evil.
And when he finds the means to remove the evil from the world, he develops a god complex which makes him arrogant enough to see everyone else beneath him. He gets misguided by the power of the Death Note thus actually forgetting the real goal he had in mind. However, a fan theory argues that what Light did was not exactly wrong.
Fan Theory Suggests Light Was Right
The theory shared by genderfluidkurapika on Tumblr states that millions of people who have money or privileges avoid punishment for their crimes, proving Light’s assertion that there is no justice.
He saw an opportunity, and since no one else was acting, he took advantage of it while also developing a very pleasant god complex. Part of Light’s reasoning stems from the fact that his father, who was also a police officer, taught him the importance of taking action against crime.
Light also harbored a literal desire to be the god of the new world. Fear, whether it be of hell or other punishments, is the driving force behind many religions, leading people to seek out goodness and repent of their transgressions. Light also sought to impose fear as a governing principle, threatening to kill anyone who disobeyed the law.
