Bandai Namco Boss Doesn't Expect Armored Core 6 To be as Big as Elden Ring

Armored Core 6: Fires of Rubicon is the latest game from famed developer FromSoftware after last year’s mega-hit Elden Ring. FromSoftware is known for creating and popularizing the Soulslike genre of games, which emphasizes high difficulty through punishing combat, big boss fights, and customization.

Elden Ring featured all of that in a massive open world full of hidden areas, secrets to uncover, items to find and much more, leading to rave reviews for the game at launch, and its popularity has only grown since then, which is reflected in its sales and positive reputation. Bandai Namco, the publisher of FromSoftware’s games, recently spoke on Armored Core 6 ahead of its launch.

What did Bandai Namco say about Armored Core 6?

Bandai Namco Europe CEO Arnaud Muller spoke to GamesIndustry.biz. just before the game’s release, saying that the developer’s experience with Elden Ring really helped them create Armored Core 6: Fires of Rubicon. Muller also believed that this was the right time to draw new players to the franchise. He explained:

“This is an opportunity for us to truly widen the audience of the Armored Core games. My ambitions are not on par with Elden Ring, but our ambitions are way bigger than the previous Armored Core games. Thanks to Elden Ring, FromSoftware has become a seal, a guarantee of quality, and therefore people will see that the Metacritic of this game is great, [that] it’s challenging but very rewarding, [and say] ‘I wanna try that game’”.

Later on in the same interview, Muller also spoke on the expected sales of the game as well as what players familiar with FromSoftware’s previous games can expect. He said:

“This is a big step up in this franchise. We are not going to be able to match Elden Ring numbers but we will way surpass what Armored Core previous games have done. We have a great game in our hands, the gameplay, the battle system is very loyal to what FromSoftware fans are used to, so we really want to take this IP further in the relationship with FromSoftware. My expectation is that people who have discovered [their] games via Elden Ring will enjoy Armored Core.”

What kind of game is Armored Core 6?

A big step away from the high fantasy setting of Elden Ring and Dark Souls before it, Armored Core 6: Fires of Rubicon is instead a mecha-based vehicular combat game. Players take control of giant robots or mechs, which are the titular Armored Cores, and can then deeply customize them to their liking before heading out into combat. Combat allows for fast, fluid movement and takes place at a high pace.
