Portraying the character for over a decade, the actress has been aware of the distinction that set her character apart.
In an earlier interview, she highlighted Penny’s departure from the typical portrayal of female characters, emphasizing how Penny’s relatability and depth resonated deeply with audiences.
Kaley Cuoco Reflected on Her The Big Bang Theory Character’s Enduring Appeal
In an interview with First For Women, Kaley Cuoco reflected on the enduring appeal of Chuck Lorre’s sitcom, while sharing insight into what made the characters in The Big Bang Theory stand out from the characters typically seen on television.
“These guys are so lovable and charming and non-offensive,” she said before adding, “They’re not in your face.” And The Flight Attendant star suggested that the makers took a similar approach with her character, Penny, as well.
She argued that, unlike stereotypical female characters, Penny is not portrayed as a “raging s*xpot,” which she believed could alienate both male and female viewers. She said during the interview,
And my character is not the raging s*xpot who women don’t want to watch and men are bothered by. She’s not obnoxious and the characters are all so lovable.
As Cuoco suggested, Penny does stand out significantly from typical female portrayals as her character evolves significantly throughout the series, depicting her as both realistic and inspiring.
Penny’s genuine relationship with other characters, especially Leonard and Sheldon which continued to be at the center of the show, also deeply resonated with viewers.
Kaley Cuoco’s Loveable Character Saved The Big Bang Theory
When Chuck Lorre initially pitched the sitcom, Kaley Cuoco’s character, Penny was not part of the show. However, instead of the sweet and loveable neighbor, Sheldon and Leonard were in for a rude and mean character, who did not sit well in the equation.
CBS Chairwoman, Nina Tessler revealed the details surrounding Penny’s inclusion in the show in an interview with Emmy Magazine, calling her the “secret sauce” for the show’s success.
There was so much about the pilot that did work. But there were parts of the script that didn’t work, and we had to recast an actress — Kaley Cuoco joined the cast, and she was the secret sauce. Chuck and Bill Prady delivered a pilot script, and the rest is history.
Both the showrunners Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady also revealed that while the audience hated the initial female character they had planned to introduce, Cuoco’s character resonated far more positively with audiences.
