Quentin Tarantino’s filmmaking is recognized worldwide, not only because of the actors that star in his movies but also the uniqueness of them. They have some of the most fleshed-out, well-written characters, as well as some extremely distinctive and creative camera work. The plots are deeply immersive and the dialogue is extremely memorable.
Some of his works that perfectly showcase this are Kill Bill, Pulp Fiction, and The Hateful Eight. Through these, he has been awarded a number of accolades, including being nominated for and winning an Academy Award a number of times throughout his career.
Being as successful as he is, it is only natural that Tarantino has had a fair share of interactions with movie critics. While many directors have many different ways of dealing with criticism, it might not be too far-fetched to say that his way is the most unique. The reason for this is the fact that he pays no heed to them.
Quentin Tarantino Talks About Movie Geeks
Hollywood’s Boy Wonder, via David’s Movie Corner, was a documentary film created by Quentin Tarantino, where we followed the director after he had made Reservoir Dogs and during the making of one of his most successful projects, Pulp Fiction.
There are many different segments in this film, one in which he talks about his opinions on what film geeks are like. He started by saying that, though they are extremely passionate about cinema, and have an extremely highly developed opinion, they don’t have much to show for it.
“The thing about film geeks They have an intense love for film. Incredible love for film. Incredible passion, they devote a lot of time, they devote a lot of money, and they devote a lot of life to the following of film. But they don’t have that much to show for all this devotion other than a movies poster collection, or a still collection. The one thing they do have to definitely show for it, is they have their opinion. Alright, they have a highly developed opinion.”
He then went on to talk about something he had learned ever since he started working in Hollywood. He stated that something he found out very quickly working in the industry, was that it is very difficult to find someone who is willing to stick to that opinion. He elaborated on this stating that everyone in this industry is looking for an excuse to be told what is good and what they should like and shouldn’t like.
Quentin Tarantino Does Not Care
Quentin Tarantino then went on to talk about how he stands out differently amongst these people. He stated in this documentary, via David’s Movie Corner, that he himself is a very passionate movie geek. This is something we see very clearly throughout the film, specifically in the section, where he visits video archives, where we find out just how much the director knows about movies.
“ But what you find out fairly quickly in Hollywood is this is a community where hardly anybody trusts their own opinion. People want people to tell them what is good, what to like, what not to like.” He went on, “Now here I come, I am a film geek, my opinion is every thing. Alright, you can all disagree with me, I don’t care. Alright, I know I am right, as far as I’m concerned. Alright, and I’ll argue anybody down.”
He explained that even though he’s an individual in Hollywood now, he stands out from the rest for one very big reason. He elaborated on this reason, stating that for him, his opinion is everything. So much so that it does not matter to him if everyone was disagreeing with him, he would stand true, to what he believes in as he truly believes that he is right.
