Hayden Christensen Has No One Else To Blame Other Than The Fans!
Starring in the Star Wars movies, Christensen played the character of Darth Vader for the original trilogy. The actor was heavily criticized for his performance in the beginning and fans did not like his take on Vader at all.
In an interview with Empire, the actor revealed that his performance was heavily criticized and fans essentially blamed him for his poor acting skills. Hayden Christensen stated that the fans had a sense of ownership of these Star Wars characters and that was one of the problems.
“Because Star Wars has had the cultural impact that it has, these characters almost become public domain, where people feel a sense of ownership over them. The character was criticised, my performance was criticised, and that part sucked.”
He further continued,
“But I also felt like I had some context that perhaps helped a little bit. When Episode I came out, there was a lot of excitement that they were making a new Star Wars, and it was going to be the backstory of Darth Vader. But I had friends that were upset that the character was starting off as this young kid.”
As the story continued, Christensen talked about the fans of the Star Wars franchise. The actor revealed because of these characters’ public nature, the fans had their own sense of disbelief which caused some of the negative reviews.
Christensen Did Not Understand Why The Movie Failed!
Starring in the role of Anakin Skywalker, the Canadian actor revealed that there was a certain angle in which he thought that the fans were to blame. Simply put, the actor stated that the fans had developed some very high expectations and were disappointed by the end result.
“And I didn’t understand the disconnect between the movie that I saw, and the negativity in some of the reviews. In a way that sort of criticism, I think, comes from a certain failure of their own suspension of disbelief.”
He further continued,
“These people don’t need to sound and behave the way that we might expect. And if you’re going to sit down and think that you’re getting something that is of our current zeitgeist, then you’re setting yourself up for something else. You know what I mean?”
The actor redeemed himself in recent years and was even last seen donning the role of Anakin Skywalker in the 2023 series Ahsoka starring Rosario Dawson. The 2023 series and the entire Star Wars franchise is available to stream on DIsney+.
