No matter the age, these villages will go to any extent to take the upper hand over their enemies and that means even if it meant involving kids. This was shown when Rin was used as a vessel for Isobu and a kidnapping attempt on Hinata when she was a child.
Though there were many elite clans in the story among them the most powerful were Senju’s, Uzumaki and Uchiha. Each individual in them was a threat to other clans.
Uzumaki possessed the “fuinjutsu” also known as sealing jutsu and had vast chakra reserves, even though they did not have any ulterior motives they were still wiped out by other clans.
Following this massacre, many fans speculate that the Senju went into hiding to prevent the same fate from falling on their shoulders.
The Senju were quite potent with Hashirama being a member of the bloodline proving their superiority over others.
