Like Netflix’s third season of Narcos: Mexico, Griselda on Netflix stands out as a cinematic masterpiece and the first outstanding series of 2024. Produced by the creators of Narcos, Carlo Bernard, Ingrid Escajeda, and Doug Miro, the show provides a captivating depiction of the ascent and downfall of one of the world’s most notorious crime bosses.

FandomWire’s M.N. Miller lauds Sofia Vergara’s performance, describing her as “electrifying.” Miller emphasizes that the Modern Family actress undergoes a remarkable transformation in her portrayal of The Godmother.

“Vergara is practically unrecognizable as the feared Miami drug lord. She fully embodies the role, leaving all traces of Gloria Pritchett behind.” This role showcases a side of the actress that viewers have never seen before, making the Netflix series a compelling and unique experience that might not be witnessed again.

Griselda has not yet been renewed for a second season.

Griselda is still waiting on the green light for a second-season renewal. One factor is that Nielson’s ratings will be available for the Netflix action-comedy series in March 2024. However, according to the viewership tracking website Television Stats, the drama has impressive numbers.

The Vergara Vehicle currently holds the top spot on Netflix, making it the highest-rated crime series on streaming and the second most-watched drama this week, surpassed only by the Apple TV+ miniseries Masters of the Air. Impressively, it boasts an engagement rate of 72%. For context, the third-ranking show, True Detective Night Country, lags behind at 40%.

The series has garnered acclaim from both fans and critics, indicating a promising potential for more stories. According to the aggregate entertainment website Rotten Tomatoes, Griselda holds an 88% approval rating from critics based on 40 reviews. Additionally, it boasts a significant 78% approval rate from the audience, with over 100 verified reviews.

However, since this is a miniseries, its future may depend on finding stories that align with the timeline of The Godmother’s arrival in the United States.

What is Griselda Season 1 about?

Sofia Vergara, who plays Blanco, escaped to Miami with her three sons after leaving her husband, Alberto, and fleeing Bogotá. She moves in with an old friend, Carmen (Vanessa Ferlito), who abandoned that lifestyle years ago. However, Blanco possesses a kilo of cocaine, the world’s greatest product, and requires seed money for her family.

Playing a dangerous game, she calls upon an old friend, Arturo (Christian Tappan), to assist in smuggling the nose candy into the country, leveraging her connections with women in the sex trade. This attracts the attention of a local drug kingpin (José Zúñiga), a sicario (Alberto Guerra), and a female intelligence officer (Juliana Aiden Martinez) in the Miami Police Department.

Soon, the operation expands from Colombia, the Carrabian, and to the Florida panhandle.

What Could Griselda Season 2 be about?

Griselda’s continuation hinges on a potential prequel. The series concludes with an intertitle detailing the godmother’s fate—released from prison in 2004, deported to Medellin, Colombia, and assassinated by an unknown gunman in 2012 at the age of 69.

A prequel could explore The Godmother’s role in building Alberto’s empire, focusing on her past and childhood. Given her tumultuous history, especially the tragic events leading to her husband’s demise, it would be intriguing to understand if her transformation into a notorious crime boss was influenced by her upbringing.

Additionally, potential spin-offs could explore various angles. Ms. Blanco’s son Corleone, born to Dario, could be the focus of a series centered on revenge, seeking justice for his family’s tragedies. Characters like Rafa and Rivi offer rich storytelling opportunities, allowing exploration into the dynamics of the Ochoa family’s empire.

The first season of Griselda is now streaming on Netflix.
