Netflix’s The Brothers Sun is a darkly amusing action-comedy from the uber-successful television series creator Brad Falchuk (American Horror Story, Glee). The show is quite a departure for him, even though he has a wide and varied background in television.

Producing anything from musicals to horror, dramas, and even procedurals, The Brothers Sun fits those sensibilities. It has a darkly comic edge that’s brilliantly irreverent at times. The show needs a couple of episodes to find its swing and calm its uneven tone. Eventually, the series begins to gel.

Here at FandomWire, our own M.N. Miller calls The Brothers Sun “A mildly enjoyable action-series diversion that offers nuanced behavioral humor and situations when it comes to Chinese culture combined with the American experience that is relatable beyond the exaggerated.”

The Brothers Sun has not yet been renewed for a second season.

The Brothers Sun is still waiting on the green light for a second-season renewal. One factor is that Nielson’s ratings will be available for the Netflix action-comedy series in March 2024. However, according to the viewership tracking website Television Stats, The Brothers Sun has impressive numbers.

The show rose to the third spot in Netflix’s coveted top ten shows on January 7, 2024. Currently, The Brothers Sun ranks number 12 for the streaming giant. The show also carries an impressive 27.64 engagement score. The show is the fifth most popular crime series and the eleventh most popular drama.

The series is also a hit with fans and critics, which bodes well for a sophomore season. According to the aggregate entertainment website, Rotten Tomatoes, the Michelle Yeoh vehicle has 85% critic approval with 34 reviews. Also, a vital statistic is the 92% audience approval rate, with over 250 verified reviews.

The series may hinge on Michele Yeoh’s proven star power, even if we think Justin Chien can carry the show on his own.

What is The Brothers Sun Season 1 about?

The series follows the Sun family, which heads a powerful Taiwanese triad known as the “Jade Dragons.” The main character is Charles Sun (Justin Chien), the eldest son and the muscle of the notorious crime syndicate. On a quiet night, Charles enjoys baking. There’s an attempt on his life.

After defeating the assassins easily but burning his cakes, his father, Ba Ba, the Dragon Head, pays him a visit. The attack seems to be a chess maneuver to bring Charles’s father out of hiding because a few moments later, he takes a bullet from a sniper’s rifle. Before falling into a coma, he tells his son to protect his mother.

That would be Eileen (Michelle Yeoh), someone Charles hasn’t seen in almost twenty years. Eileen moved away to give his younger brother, Bruce (Sam Song Li), a chance at a normal life. Now in school and taking premed courses, the youngest Sun’s passion is comedy improv. Charles sees Bruce as a spoiled “American” instead of a dutiful Chinese son.

What Could The Brothers Sun Season 2 be about?

The season ended with breakout star Justin Chien’s character Charles heading back to Taiwan to help his mother, Eileen, establish herself as the Dragon Head. Our best guess would be that the season would take place in Taiwan. This time, the fish-out-of-water character would be Bruce, who stayed in Los Angeles to finish school and continue his improv courses.

If you remember, his father, Ba Ba, mentioned how the Jade Dragons are interested in China’s movie industry. We could easily see Bruce developing his comedy film or series. Charles would muscle a producer into starring in his creation. And since creative people often use life experiences, Bruce could cross the line using Charles.

His experience as part of the story may cross a line with Taiwanese organized crime. Of course, attacks on the Sun family’s power in Taiwan would add to the drama. This may mean Highdee Kuan, who played Charles’s love interest, Alexis, may still need to be back.

Hopefully, Bruce may find a love interest after he finds out Grace (Madison Hu) is the head of the group trying to kill his family. What can we say? Love hurts
