MatPat — the creator of The Game Theorist, The Food Theorist, The Film Theorist, The Style Theorist, and GTLive fame — shared that he and his partner, Steph, are going to appear less in videos. They want to focus more on family, work behind the scenes, and create new channels.
Matthew Patrick, widely known as MatPat, has been the face of the YouTube channel The Game Theorist for more than 14 years. He recently announced that he’s passing on his YouTube franchise (all four Theory channels) to someone else.
Yesterday, on March 9, the content creator uploaded his final video on The Game Theorists channel before stepping away to pursue new endeavors.
Fans Mourn as MatPat Drops Final YouTube Video to Bid Farewell
Earlier this year, MatPat announced that he’s taking retirement from his YouTube channels. In a video titled Goodbye Internet, the Ohio native confirmed that March 9 would be his last day of running his YouTube channels. He went on to say in the video:
“For me, and my journey in this place, I always wanted to go out on a high note. And when you stop and look at the last year, this has been the best year in the Theorist lifespan, no joke.”
In MatPat’s yesterday’s farewell video, the first of the six endings featured him making an on-camera appearance with Scott Cawthon, the creator of Five Nights at Freddy’s. There are five more secret endings, which were part of a scavenger hunt across his recent YouTube videos since he announced his retirement.
The sixth and final video, Game Theory Finale: Real Ending (6/6), features a casual conversation with MatPat’s hosts right after finishing shooting the video, along with a long message addressed to his fans. Here’s a snippet of the message:
“Remember, this isn’t an ending. Well, technically, it IS an ending because it’s the Real Ending, but you get what I’m saying. This isn’t an ending. Instead, this is a brand new and exciting beginning. And that’s not a theory. That right there, that’s a fact.”
While reacting to the YouTuber’s final Game Theory Video, fans took to X to bid farewell. While some were teary-eyed, others congratulated him for his upcoming endeavors. Check out some fan reactions:

Amazing work! You should be beyond proud.
If it says anything after pointing out role models for kids in the last film theory. I realized you're a role model for my 3 daughters and one I'm happy and proud they look up to.
Enjoy your time with your family!— Dustin Jay Moyer (@Djmoyer23) March 9, 2024
The end of an era. Good luck Matt!

Before the release of MatPat’s final theory video on March 9, YouTube organized a special farewell featuring some of its top creators like Jacksepticeye, MrBeast, and Rosanna Pansino.
MatPat and his wife Stephanie Cordato founded Game Theorists in 2011 to explore the lore and theories of popular video games. Over time, they expanded, launching spin-off channels like The Film Theorists, The Food Theorists, and The Style Theorists. As of March, the gaming channel alone has gathered 19.1 million subscribers.
MatPat’s Next Chapter After Retiring From YouTube
Game Theory will continue, and MatPat will still appear on YouTube and at various events as a guest. However, his role on the Theory channels will significantly be less.
Just a few days after releasing Goodbye Internet, Patrick was announced as a Featured Creator for VidCon. Now, he’s revealed the event that will mark his return to his on-screen role with Theorists: Creators in Fashion.
MatPat will co-host Creators in Fashion with Amy Roberts, who has been part of Style Theorists since the beginning and is now the channel’s full-time emcee.
