Robert Downey Jr. is Open to Returning to the MCU as Iron Man
Since his departure from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Robert Downey Jr. has ventured into acclaimed projects such as starring in the Oscar-winning film and earning an Academy Award for his exceptional performance in Oppenheimer.
In his recent interview with Esquire, he was asked about the possibility of returning to the superhero universe as an Academy Award winner. And the 59-year-old actor has expressed willingness to return to the superhero universe, stating, “Happily. It’s too integral a part of my DNA. That role chose me.”
He also hinted at his potential comeback to the franchise as he expressed unwavering confidence in Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige. The actor implied that the decisions made under his guidance are bound to succeed, suggesting that he may indeed return to the MCU if approached by Feige with an enticing offer. The Iron Man star said,
“And look, I always say, Never, ever bet against Kevin Feige. It is a losing bet. He’s the house. He will always win.”
While there hasn’t been official confirmation of his return to the franchise, fans have eagerly anticipated the possibility of seeing their favorite superhero once again. And Downey Jr.’s openness to the idea of reprising his iconic role offers a new source of hope for fans.
Robert Downey Jr. Believes Some of His Best Work Didn’t Get the Recognition
Robert Downey Jr. has gained immense praise and acclaim for his portrayal of Tony Stark, aka Iron Man in the MCU. However, the actor believes that some of the finest work of his career has been overlooked because of its genre.
During an appearance on the Literally! With Rob Lowe podcast, he expressed feeling a sense of vulnerability after leaving the franchise, as he acknowledged that his talents may have been undervalued within the superhero framework.
“I felt so exposed after being in the cocoon of Marvel where I think I did some of the best work I will ever do, but it went a little bit unnoticed because of the genre.”
He further reflected on the poorly received 2020 film Dolittle and described the experience as a “favor” to himself, suggesting that it forced him to confront his own vulnerabilities and reevaluate his understanding of confidence and security.
The Avengers star also expressed gratitude for the opportunity to work with Christopher Nolan on Oppenheimer, implying that the experience came at the right time for him to learn and grow as an actor. Downey Jr. is now set to star in the upcoming black comedy-drama The Sympathizer, which is expected to premiere on Max on April 14, 2024.
