With the launch of Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero drawing ever closer, we are getting to learn more about what to expect from the title resurrecting the Budokai Tenkaichi series. The universe is one of the most expansive in anime, and a true fighting game would reflect the same with the character roster.

Thankfully, Sparking Zero is doing just this, as we have learned of many characters who will be playable in the game. One can expect the usual suspects to appear: Goku, Piccolo, Vegeta, etc. But there are also some more niche characters on the list, which could hint at more to come!

The 3D environments of the Budokai Tenkaichi games allowed the developers to create fights that, otherwise, would not have had the same impact in the side-to-side format. It also allowed for giant characters such as Vegeta’s Ape Form, Hirudegarn, and Janemba. Fans of these character types will be happy to know they will return in the upcoming game.

Sparking Zero will feature the largest playable roster of any Dragon Ball game, with even minor characters getting their chance in the spotlight. The game will include characters from the original series, the Z series, the GT series, and even Super! Given the efforts the developers are making, it would make sense to include characters from recent movies.

The new Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero “Sword vs. Fists” trailer for the game has, once again, expanded the roster with quite a few new characters. Among these is Anilaza (or Agnilasa), a giant character from the Tournament of Power. In the trailer, we can see it using a dimensional attack before using an energy bomb to destroy everything.

Anilaza’s presence has also confirmed, for many, that Cell Max will also be making an appearance in the game. The resurrected giant form of Cell, this character was introduced in the Super Hero movie, featuring Piccolo, Pan, and Adult Gohan. It was against Cell Max that Gohan unlocked his Beast form, and players should be able to recreate the clash come October 8!

While a massive character roster is important, the developers also need to include specific modes to make the most of it. Thankfully, the couch co-op mystery has been put to rest, but there are some limitations to the mode that has baffled some fans, such as it only being accessible in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, and the inability for the fighters to choose the same character.

Fans of the series can also relive its iconic moments through the Episode Battles mode. Here, players will work through the narrative of the shows and take part in interactive, cinematic battles such as Teen Gohan vs. Cell, Goku vs. Jiren, and many more!

However, these won’t be battles on rails with the player simply button-mashing. Some actions and decisions by the player can change the events in the fight, adding a sense of dynamism and offering an enhanced experience of the battle.
