There are also new competitive rewards and jade weapons to look forward to in the upcoming season. Before all the new content drops along with Season 9, players should also ensure they claim any unclaimed rewards from earlier seasons. Fans have long been divided about Blizzard not listening to fan feedback, so the upcoming changes should hopefully please the majority of them.

Overwatch 2 Season 9 is scheduled to go live tomorrow, the 13th of February, by 2 PM ET. Blizzard is implementing some big updates to give players the “opportunity to build on your skills and see how you progress through the Competitive ranks.” Blizzard has also built a new, accurate system to improve matchmakers in the game.

Blizzard has also revealed exactly how the ranking system works, giving more transparency to players while explaining why their rank went up or down. An infographic explains the conditions under which ranks go up or down, as explained in the image below.

Players will also see brand-new Placement Matches that will reset everyone’s Skill Ranks. All the players will now begin their way to the top ranks through these Placement Matches at the same rank after the reset. Players will have the opportunity to make big gains in deciding their starting rank.

As for the highest rank players can achieve in the game, in Overwatch 2 Season 9, there’s a new tier added to the very top, named Champion. The ultimate rank of a Champion will be above Grandmaster and will require players to win several games to reach that rank, so it will be rather exclusive.

New Jade Weapons, Legacy Competitive Points, and Other Changes

In Overwatch 2 Season 9, players will be able to unlock new Jade Weapons in the game once they earn 3,000 competitive points. Earning these Jade Weapons will help players showcase their dedication to Competitive Play, regardless of their rank.

Players will also see their competitive points from Season 8 get converted to Legacy Competitive Points once Overwatch 2 Season 9 begins. After the 2024 Competitive Year, players will see their points converted to Legacy Competitive Points.

The new changes to core gameplay mentioned in the blog include a more consistent feel when firing and landing shots on opponents, fewer impacts through burst damages, and adjustments made to in-game healing and damage.

There are also changes made to projectile size for Hitscan projectiles, travel time projectiles, and very large projectiles ranging from +0.05 meters to +0.15 meters with differences in speed without making them weaker.

Dealing damage to enemies will reduce the target’s healing received by 20%. An updated support role passive will see players “begin regenerating health after 2.5 seconds.” Tank role passive will result in reduced knockback received. Ultimate charge generated by healing and damage received will also now be less, while Role Queue game modes will see players get increased health.

Overall, it seems like Overwatch Season 9 may be worth the wait, which is very much needed after the last few seasons.
