Fallout 4’s next-gen update was announced by Bethesda a while back and was supposedly coming in 2023. However, based on their latest post on Facebook, it seems that players will have to wait a little bit longer until they can play the game on modern consoles and PCs.
Previously, Bethesda announced the next-gen update for the game in October 2022, so it’s been well over a year since fans have been waiting for the game to run and look much more enhanced on modern machines. Once the update comes out, we can expect higher frame rates, a performance mode option, and 4K resolution updates to the visuals.
Fallout 4’s next-gen update will arrive in 2024

Given how close we are to bidding farewell to 2023, it was unlikely that the next-gen update for Fallout 4 would arrive before the year ends. The post by Bethesda has confirmed this and stated that players can expect to revisit the game (through next-gen updates) in 2024. According to the devs:
We know you’re excited, and so are we! But we need a bit more time and look forward to an exciting return to the Commonwealth in 2024.
The update will feature a variety of changes to how players experience the game, including visual and quality-of-life enhancements. Something similar was done for Bethesda’s well-known RPG, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. In 2021, the game received an update that improved the game’s overall quality on Xbox Series X and PS5.
While there’s not much we know about exact gameplay changes and additions to the game’s content itself, it’s unlikely that devs will add new content to the storyline or game world. This update is more focused on making the game feel richer and perform adequately on modern machines.
Perhaps the timing of this would make sense when considering a relevant TV Show coming in April next year. Fallout’s very own adaptation on Amazon Prime Video will premiere, and from the trailer, it seems like Fallout 4’s themes and knack for all things apocalyptic are going to reach audiences far and wide. This will likely bring new players to the community, and what better time for a next-gen update?
8 years later, Fallout 4 still remains a popular game

At the time of writing, Fallout 4 has more than 12,500 active players braving the post-apocalyptic world created by Bethesda. Funnily, the latest modern-gen game by the same studio has almost the same amount of active players on Steam.
That’s right, at the moment, Starfield has close to 12,400 players enjoying the game. To be fair, this is only the Steam count and not the overall numbers from Game Pass or other platforms.
Fallout 4 was originally released in 2015 and was the first big overhaul to Bethesda’s otherwise poor gun mechanics overwhelmed by the plethora of NPCs, quests, and exploration other RPG games would offer.
While the game’s story was somewhat questionable in the context of quality, the upgraded mechanics, graphics, and quest systems were welcomed by millions of players worldwide. After almost a decade of memes, bugs, glitches, and thousands of stories told by the game; Fallout 4 remains a popular choice for players who crave open-world experiences with engaging narratives.
Despite the complaints people had with the game initially, the game’s reputation has only increased over the years. This is more prevalent now given how Starfield’s mixed reviews made people miss Bethesda’s older games even more.
Furthermore, the game’s modding community stays ever so vibrant and alive. From improved in-game maps to downright Thomas the Tank Engine obliterating you in all ways possible; Fallout 4’s modding community is as bizarre and genius as it has been with other Bethesda games. And, it’s only going to get more prominent once new and returning players join the cause whenever the next-gen update drops.
