After years of speculation and fan hype, it seems that we may finally be getting a “Nintendo Switch 2”. While Nintendo has yet to give official confirmation about the console, evidence has been mounting since last month’s Gamescom that a Switch 2 announcement may be happening sooner rather ran later.

Where does all this new evidence regarding the Nintendo Switch 2 come from? Well, according to Eurogamer several developer presentations for the Switch 2 took place behind closed doors at Gamescom 2023. One game that was said to be demoed on the Switch 2 was an upgraded version of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, which debuted as a launch title for the Nintendo Switch in 2017. However, don’t get your hopes up about a Breath of the Wild re-release as Eurogamer makes it clear that it “is just a tech demo”.

According to a separate report from VGC, Breath of the Wild wasn’t all that was demoed at Gamescom. Another source claimed that The Matrix Awakens Unreal Engine 5 tech demo was running on target specs for Nintendo’s next console. For the Nintendo Switch 2 to be running a demo that was originally released to highlight the power of PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, shows that it has some serious power packed between its Joy-Cons.

The Matrix Awakens tech demo is reported to have been using Nvidia’s DLSS upscaling technology to implement advanced ray-tracing technology and visuals that are comparable to PS5 and Xbox One X consoles. Just be warned, it has been noted that the Switch 2 will most likely be closer to PS4 and Xbox One in terms of raw power due to its nature as a handheld console.

At the moment everything we’ve heard about the Nintendo Switch 2 is purely rumour. Although VGC has reported that sources indicate a 2024 launch for the Nintendo Switch 2 would make sense. Nintendo has yet to put out a concrete announcement regarding the console.

With a fantastic line-up of games announced by Nintendo for the upcoming year including Super Mario Bros. Wonder, a new Princess Peach game and a port of Luigi’s Mansion 2, The Nintendo Switch has plenty of life left in it before it’s replaced. However, some of these upcoming games could also serve as launch titles on the Switch 2, including the rumoured Super Mario Odyssey sequel.

In a Q and A last year, Nintendo also hinted at how it can port its 98 million annual players over to what comes next.
