A new series following the adventures of the famed mystery solver is confirmed to be in the works at The CW, and it will feature a new Sherlock Holmes as well as a very intriguing twist to the story.

The plot of the upcoming show reveals that Thewlis’ Sherlock Holmes is unable to solve a mystery case without involving his loved ones. He meets a young American woman named Amelia (played by Blu Hunt) who soon discovers that the detective might be her long-lost father.

The pair will eventually team up to solve a conspiracy, including Amelia’s mother’s murder and the mystery behind her true father. The cast also includes Dougray Scott as Holmes’ nemesis, Moriarty. Brad Schwartz, president of entertainment at the CW Network, said during the announcement via Variety:

The CW continues to expand its original programming lineup with quality scripted and unscripted series, based on IP that everyone knows, that encourage co-viewing across generations of fans. The entire cast and creative team have done a magnificent job putting a new twist on the classic character.”

Arthur Conan Doyle’s famous novel has earned the Guinness World Record for the highest number of onscreen adaptations. The most recent interpretation of the lore saw Millie Bobby Brown transform into Enola Holmes, the young sister of the detective.

This is not canon to the author’s narrative, though it received generally favorable reviews from the fans so it is safe to assume that viewers are very much open to fresh and unexpected concepts from the beloved classic.

However, this innovative idea of bringing a new character into Sherlock Holmes’ story that never existed in the books is yet to be seen how it will fare with the audience.

Many fans may be bummed to know that Benedict Cumberbatch won’t star as Sherlock Holmes in the new series. After all, he is one of the most popular actors to play the role in this generation. Indeed, the famed detective has become a legacy character, and its unexpected success has called for more modern adaptations. The Doctor Strange actor said during an interview with Collider:

For any actor to play an iconic character, there’s a huge pressure that’s associated with delivering something that everyone knows culturally, especially in our country. So, it was quite nerve-wracking, but there is an element of a blank canvas because of this brilliant re-invention and re-invigoration of him being a 21st-century hero.”

Indeed, many more versions of Sherlock Holmes will certainly be made in the future, and along with it are more ingenious concepts that would hopefully entice the younger generation to read the original novels.
