Leonardo DiCaprio became a global star for his role as Jack Dawson in James Cameron’s disaster flick, Titanic. The blockbuster was the first film to ever cross the billion-dollar mark at the box office and was the highest-grossing film of all time until it was beaten by Cameron’s Avatar. It was also the most expensive film ever made at the time of production.

Though the film is known for its epic scenes involving the real-life disaster, the heart of the story remains the love story between Jack and Rose, played by DiCaprio and Kate Winslet. One of the most controversial movie moments happens when Jack dies from freezing after he saves Rose by putting her on a floating door. Many believed that there was still room on that door for Jack. However, DiCaprio chooses to be silent about the decision.

Few films have had the impact on pop culture the way Titanic has had in Hollywood. Despite not being part of a franchise, the Leonardo DiCaprio starrer was the highest-grossing film at the time, earning over $1.8 billion upon release, and earning even more during multiple re-releases, clocking over $2.2 billion worldwide.

James Cameron’s epic disaster film followed the romance of Jack and Rose, a couple from two ends of the social hierarchy, who meet aboard the ill-fated RMS Titanic in 1912. Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet played the lead roles in the period drama, and their characters remain iconic to this day.

One of the most harrowing moments of the film is the ending where after the ship sinks, Jack and Rose somehow make it out of the ship aboard a raft, but end up in the freezing waters of the Atlantic Ocean. Jack puts Rose in a life jacket and puts her aboard a floating wooden door as he stays with her until a rescue boat arrives. However, Jack freezes to death and Rose has to let him go.

The moment was seen as a grand romantic moment between the couple but has also been widely debated as to why Jack did not climb aboard the floating door. The door shown in the film seemed to have ample space for both. While James Cameron has stressed how it had to happen for dramatic purposes, fans still argue that there was a possibility of a happy ending for the two star-crossed lovers.

What Did Leonardo DiCaprio Say About The Door In Titanic?

The ‘Door Debate’ raged on, with the Mythbusters even concluding that Jack and Rose could have fit atop the door. However, star Leonardo DiCaprio seems to have chosen silence with respect to the debate and did not give his opinion. In an interview with MTV News, Leonardo DiCaprio was asked about the controversy to which he only said, “No comment”.

His Once Upon A Time in Hollywood co-stars Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie who were present at the interview tried to coax an answer out of him, but DiCaprio committed to his answer of, “No comment.” Robbie revealed her feelings about the scene in general,

“Oh my gosh! I thought it. I remember bawling my eyes out when I was a girl…That is the biggest controversy in modern cinema history….Did you mention it at the time? Were you like, ‘Should we make the door [smaller]?’”

However, DiCaprio still remained tightlipped about the controversy. Kate Winslet once mentioned on the Happy, Sad, and Confused podcast that even if both had fit on the door, it would not help them survive. She said,

“Once and for all, he could have fit on that door but it would not have stayed afloat, [but it was not a] sustainable idea.”

Though the makers have made it clear that the decision to let Jack die was a creative one, likening it to Romeo and Juliet’s tragic ending, fans still seem to be looking for a happier end to one of the most beloved movie couples.
