Oscar Isaac portrayed the main villain in Bryan Singer’s X-Men: Apocalypse, an additional project to his portfolio of massive franchises after starring as Poe Dameron in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. While the X-Men film helped usher the actor into the realm of Marvel, he was notably miserable during the production.
This experience, however, did not affect his decision to try another Marvel role. The actor soon joined Disney+’s Moon Knight, a roaring success for both Isaac and the studio. As he reflects on his journey portraying heroes and villains, the Spider-Man star points out the good, the bad, and the things that didn’t exactly go as planned.
Oscar Isaac Reveals What Went Wrong In X-Men: Apocalypse
Oscar Isaac initially dissed his villain role in X-Men: Apocalypse and admitted how “excruciating” it felt to be in a clunky suit that barely allowed him to move his body. In his interview with GQ, he explained:
“Apocalypse, that was excruciating. I didn’t know when I said yes that that was what was going to be happening. That I was going to be encased in glue and latex and in a 40-pound suit that I had to wear a cooling mechanism at all times. I couldn’t really move my head ever.”
Despite his difficult time on the set of Apocalypse, Isaac admitted he does not “disown” his performance and effort in the movie. In fact, he shared why he wanted to be in it in the first place. He told the New York Times:
“No, I don’t disown it. I know exactly what I went in there wanting to do and the reasons why. There were these amazing actors involved that I really wanted to work with, [James] McAvoy and [Michael] Fassbender and Jennifer Lawrence.”
Isaac noted that he loved the X-Men franchise as a kid, and he thought Apocalypse was a “freaky, weird character.” When he arrived on the set, he was covered in prosthetics and he wore a heavy suit that limited his movements. He could not even see anybody, which evidently took away the fun. The Dune actor lamented how he was with talented actors whom he admired but could not even see their faces.
It seems that most of the actor’s concerns were directed at his cumbersome costume. Despite the wardrobe disaster, Isaac doesn’t seem to think his time working on Apocalypse was terrible at all.

Oscar Isaac Thinks X-Men: Apocalypse Could Have Been Better
In the same interview with the New York Times, Isaac spoke of the Marvel film with a positive attitude. Although it was not incredibly fulfilling on his part, he believed it could have been improved. The actor added:
“I still think back to that time with fondness. I wish it would have been a better film and that they would have taken care of the character a little better, but those are the risks.”
It is quite delightful to know that Isaac’s experience in Apocalypse did not make him turn away from superhero roles. Had he felt quite sour about it, fans would never have met him in Moon Knight, which is one of Marvel’s top-tier shows.
