Over the years, Supermassive Games has created an extensive collection of horror games that utilize co-op within those games. When it was announced that Supermassive Games would be working on Little Nightmares 3, many gamers were ecstatic at this news, as they were expecting a co-op experience like no other. They hoped for what they have experienced in other games from Supermassive like: The Quarry, Until Dawn, and The Dark Pictures Anthology.

So far, it has been announced that Little Nightmares 3 will have co-op throughout the story, but the issue is there will be not be couch co-op. This is something Supermassive Games is well known for within their titles, but the reason behind this decision is the developers feel the gripping and atmospheric horror would not have the same impact if couch co-op were an option.

The only reason Supermassive Games are even including co-op online is that it was such a requested feature for Little Nightmares 2 that it would be a mistake for them not to include it in Little Nightmares 3. That being said, it will be a unique inclusion in the Little Nightmares saga, as it will create some unique and exciting gameplay mechanics that will have player’s running for their lives, whilst screaming from the horrors that lurk in the dark world.

How Will This Affect Little Nightmare 3’s Release?

To keep the atmosphere Little Nightmares 3 will not have local co-op.
In order to keep the atmosphere, Little Nightmares 3 will not have local co-op.

At the moment, we do not have an official release date for Little Nightmares 3, but with the trailer being released, there is potential for it to arrive sometime within the next year. This will most likely be Winter 2024. Many fans of the franchise will be excited to see the release with or without couch co-op, as the last game left players wanting more and that is what will hopefully be delivered.

For now, fans of the franchise will have to settle for online co-op, which may hurt the sales of the game, but many will look past this as they know Supermassive Games are fantastic. They have done a great job as co-op developers who will create a unique experience for their players and long-term fans of the franchise.

Even though many are excited about co-op, some are worried that the game will rely too heavily on those co-op elements, and fear Little Nightmares 3 will take the same path as games like It Takes Two and A Way Out. These title have made it so you can only play the game in co-op, but that most likely won’t be the case here. Supermassive Games are aware that the fans of the franchise will still want to be able to play the game solo with an AI companion.
