Salma Hayek Was Heartbroken After Finding Out Her Mother Was More Interested in Watching Korean Shows Than $402M Marvel Movie

Desperado (1995) star Salma Hayek appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on October 15, 2021, to talk about her entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Eternals. She was also accompanied by her co-star in the film, Kumail Nanjiani.

As excited as she was about the film, she explained what really happened when she communicated about it with her family. Hayek’s mother, as she pointed out, wasn’t much into the superhero genre.

Eternals was Marvel’s first grand step toward exploring the cosmic entities they call Celestials, and while it was a proud moment for Hayek, who played Ajak, she said that her mother had a completely different idea about the $402 million film.

Saddened by the fact that her mother was more into Korean soap operas, Hayek struggled to explain to her what the film was about and that she played a superhero.

Jimmy Kimmel was too curious to know about both of their family’s reactions when they learned about their big Marvel roles. Nanjiani turned to Salma Hayek and let her go first.

The one person in her life who was most excited at the time of the film’s release was her husband, as she said to Kimmel. She revealed that her mother thought the film had some relation to architecture.

“I think my mom, she’s watching Korean telenovelas now. I don’t know why, she’s Mexican,” Hayek said on Jimmy Kimmel Live! “And for her, it’s like some Marvel movie.”

She continued that her mother asked, “A Marvel movie, is it about architecture?” I was like, “No! No! I’m a superhero.” Though her mother wasn’t much aware of the franchise, she pointed out that her father was a little bit more into the genre.
