Talking to US Weekly, an insider stated the breakup was harsh on Gyllenhaal as “it broke his heart.” And while the actors “fought constantly” toward the end of their relationship, another source revealed that “no one cheated. There was no drama.”

As for the reason behind the breakup, sources state that Witherspoon was getting cold feet about making it official with the Spider-Man: Far From Home actor, owing to her failed marriage and her two kids.  According to a source,

“[Reese] felt pressured to wed again but she wasn’t ready…She couldn’t give Jake enough and she got cold feet. Jake wanted all of her…She really worried that they didn’t have enough in common.”

Sources also added that Witherspoon worried she was projecting most of her energy toward her ex-boyfriend and not enough toward her children, Ava and Deacon.
