Greta Gerwig’s Barbie is still making headlines after winning one of the eight total nominations at the 96th Academy Awards. Barbie also became the highest-grossing movie of 2023. Now, Olivia Colman revealed that she was a part of the film until the director decided to cut it.
The comment from the Oscar winner on the pink summer blockbuster came after Colman’s Turtle Journey co-star Helen Mirren revealed that she had to fight Colman for the role of the Narrator. Colman, whose role was cut, however, has not much regret about it.
Olivia Colman Commented On Her Scrapped Barbie Role
At the New York City premiere of Sony Pictures Classics’ mystery comedy Wicked Little Letters, Olivia Colman’s latest, the actor revealed that she hasn’t seen her scrapped Barbie scene. “I never saw it,” Colman told IndieWire at the Crosby Street Hotel.
“They had arranged a call between me, David Heyman, the producer, and Greta Gerwig. I thought, ‘Oh, I know what this must be. It made perfect sense because it didn’t add to the story, it was just fun. Maybe they were running over, I don’t know. But it was kind of perfect for me, because I got paid for the job, and then no one could say I was shit in it.”
Colman, who has an illustrated career as an actor, has been a devout professional. She has no regrets or will never repent over the deleted scenes from the 2023 blockbuster. Starring Margot Robbie as Barbie and Ryan Gosling as Ken Greta Gerwig’s Barbie went on to gross over $1.4 billion at the box office (per The Numbers). A glorious success, indeed.
Helen Mirren Revealed Fighting Olivia Colman Over The Narrator Role in Barbie
Helen Mirren who played the Narrator in Barbie, had to fight her fellow British actor Colman as “she [Colman] comes in and tries to take over the role of the Narrator and I had to fight her off,” Mirren told Variety. The actor also revealed that, like Colman, she also had a scene filmed in the movie.
“It was a very funny scene with Olivia Colman sort of playing drunk and us clashing about who is the real grande dame of British actresses.”
In another interview, the actor, who is one Grammy away from being an EGOT, said that she and Colman are on good terms.
“Well, it was all scripted. It wasn’t real and we’re very very good friends and I’m a huge admirer of Olivia, obviously. Um, but yes it was a, it was a funny scene that we shot for Barbie which got cut probably rightfully,” she told ExtraTV.
The Barbie craze is not over as it still has the spotlight above with the constant buzz the movie has been in. Also, with the wave of time, new details from the movie are being revealed, and only time will tell if there were more such incidents that could create another splash surrounding the movie.
