James Gunn’s swansong for Marvel Studios will be his final directorial venture Guardian of the Galaxy Vol 3, which releases on 5th May 2023. The director who recently jumped camps to become the head of DC has helmed the trilogy with Parts 1 and 2 gaining widespread success from fans and critics. The motley and quirky group of intergalactic superheroes headed by Peter Quill aka Star-Lord are back for what looks like the final frontier in their story.

Apart from Chris Pratt’s Star-Lord, Rocket voiced by Bradley Cooper has been one of the most loved characters in the franchise. The hilarious and brutally honest loud-mouthed raccoon has also connected with the audiences through his poignant backstory. But the heavy tone of his past has sent pangs of worry through Marvel fans who fear that James Gunn might have taken drastic steps for Rocket’s character.

“Will Rocket Die?,” Ask Worried Fans

James Gunn has claimed in no uncertain terms that Rocket’s story will take on a more serious twist in the 3rd installment of the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise. This news has made Marvel and Rocket fans anxious about their beloved character’s fate in the film. With Gunn also stating that he would want to finish Rocket’s story, Marvel buffs are preparing for the character’s imminent death in the film.

Netizens took to social media to express their views on Rocket’s predicament. James Gunn responded to these comments by giving a very ambiguous reply using a wide-eyed emoji. To add to the speculations, Gunn also replied to an opinion from a fan who said that it would be inappropriate for Rocket to die. The director once again played his cards close to his chest with a teasing statement saying,

“No one said he was going to die but that’s not how stories work”

One thing that is clear amid all these doubts is that the central narrative of the film will focus on Rocket’s story. How it ends and what’s in store for the character will be revealed in May.

Death Seems A Certainty In Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3

With multiple theories floating around regarding Rocket’s sad past, fans are preparing themselves for the character’s death albeit with a heavy heart. In the slim chance that Rocket may live, the narrative of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 indicates that someone in the group may not make it out alive. This depends on the extent to which James Gunn decides to shock the audience. With a deeper analysis, it could be assumed that since Groot was already killed once in the first installment, and the original Variant of Gamora has been sacrificed in Avengers: Infinity War, Star-Lord or Drax could become scapegoats in this film.

With Dave Bautista confirming that he wants to move on from Drax after the film to pursue other projects, it is a distinct possibility that his character in the franchise could see an end. If this were to happen, then Rocket’s fate could then take a different course outside of the Guardians franchise.
