Directed by Matt Reeves, The Batman introduced viewers to a new version of Gotham City with Robert Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne / Batman struggling against its crime and corrupt underbelly. The film was a huge critical and commercial success, warranting a second installment that is expected to start production soon.
However, a fan-made trailer has already given viewers a glimpse of what they can expect from the sequel by pitting Pattinson’s Batman against the Joker, who is on a tirade to mercilessly kill those closest to the masked vigilante. Here is how the trailer sets up a classic Batman vs Joker storyline for The Batman – Part II.
Fan-Made The Batman 2 Trailer Pits Robert Pattinson Against a Serial Killer Joker
The Batman – Part II is one of the most highly anticipated sequels, especially after the ending of the first installment introduced Barry Keoghan as the Joker, an inmate at Arkham Asylum. Thus, the ending staged a face-off between the Joker and Batman for the second installment.
A fan-made trailer posted on YouTube by Screen Culture showcases how the fated encounter between Robert Pattinson’s Batman and the Joker could go down in the sequel. The concept trailer uses footage from the first installment and splices it with scenes from Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, and Titans to set up an enthralling cat-and-mouse chase between the two characters.
Andy Serkis’ Alfred Pennyworth can be heard warning Bruce about the new threat followed by a voice, presumably the Joker stating:
“No one you cared for is safe”
As a result, the concept for the sequel indicates that the Joker will be targeting the allies of Pattinson’s Batman, including Jeffrey Wright’s James Gordon. The fan-made trailer also implies the Joker will escape from Arkham Asylum before wreaking havoc on Batman’s life.
While the concept is fun, it would be reminiscent of Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight. Therefore, it remains to be seen if director Matt Reeves indeed chooses to use the Joker as the main antagonist for the sequel or prefers to go for a lesser-known villain from Batman’s Rouge Gallery.
Robert Pattinson’s The Batman – Part II Is Expected to Start Filming This Year
Aside from its universally positive reception, The Batman grossed $772.2 million at the global box office. As a result, a sequel was soon greenlit and formally announced in April 2022 at the CinemaCon.
At the time, Pattinson and Reeves were confirmed to be returning for the sequel but no further casting announcements were made. However, Barry Keoghan has hinted that he would be reprising his role as the Joker for the sequel. Hence, we could get a Batman vs Joker storyline for the second installment.
On the other hand, Reeves has expressed an interest in exploring villains such as Mr. Freeze and Hush in the sequel. Thus, the main villain for the sequel is a mystery for now. In January 2023, it was revealed that the sequel was officially titled The Batman – Part II. According to reports, filming on the sequel is scheduled to commence in August 2024 in England.
The Batman – Part II is currently slated to be released on October 3, 2025.
