While the film highlights several moments that hint at something deeper among the two characters than the mere friendship, from their playful banter and exchanging meaningful looks to referring to each other as partners, it never really confirms anything.

Not only does the unexplored tension between Debbie and Lou leave viewers unsatisfied, but it also raises a critique of the film’s handling of romantic subplots. However, both the stars have assured the possibility of exploring such dynamics in potential future films.

“No, there hadn’t, but doesn’t mean they can’t be later episodes,” Bullock said when asked about Debbie and Lou’s potential romance in the film in a conversation with Digital Spy. Blanchett also highlighted how they have been together for a long time and are very close.

“I think Lou has quite a lot of masculine energy,” the Thor: Ragnarok star said before adding, “Doesn’t mean that they’re a couple. But they’re very close. They’ve stolen a lot of stuff together…” And it’s been something that fans are looking forward to seeing more of in a potential sequel.

Is a Sequel to Sandra Bullock’s Ocean’s 8 on the Horizon?

Ocean’s 8 served as a spin-off and the fourth installment in the Ocean’s film series. The film introduced a star-studded female cast led by Sandra Bullock’s Deborah Ocean, aka Debbie, and performed significantly well, receiving positive reviews and earning $297 million worldwide.

However, despite its substantial box-office success, the film has yet to receive a sequel. Several reasons have been suggested for the sequel’s delay or potential cancellation. It boasts an ensemble cast, including Anne Hathaway, Rihanna, Mindy Kaling, Sarah Paulson, Helena Bonham Carter, and Awkwafina alongside Bullock and Blanchett.

Scheduling conflicts have been suggested as the primary reason a sequel never materialized, as the Bird Box star noted in an interview while highlighting other issues that may have caused the sequel plans to fizzle out. The actress said, as per ScreenRant,

Well, the nice thing is, we still have our text chain. So our text chain’s still very active. You need to coordinate people’s schedules, find a badass female director, an incredible female writer, and come up with a story that no one would expect, that only women could pull off.

While a sequel to Ocean’s 8 remains uncertain, a prequel to Steven Soderbergh’s 2001 film Ocean’s Eleven is in development, reportedly with the Barbie stars Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling. George Clooney and Matt Damon have also expressed their interest to return to a sequel to Ocean’s Thirteen.

The Ocean’s film series is available to stream on Prime Video.
