Christian Bale is a renowned actor who has appeared in many incredible films throughout his career. One of Bale’s most iconic characters was his antagonistic role of Gorr the God Butcher in Marvel’s film Thor: Love and Thunder. Undeniably, the actor excelled in his role, however, before he stepped into his character, Bale had a major confusion regarding it.
According to the actor, when he read about his part, he envisioned himself exactly in the costume worn by Gorr in the comic version. Bale found it inappropriate and was worried about his appearance in the film, However, later along with the filmmaker, Bale figured out a way to his issue.
Christian Bale had major confusion regarding his character in the Marvel film
Remember Christian Bale’s character in his Marvel debut film Thor: Love and Thunder, where he played the iconic role of supervillain Gorr the God Butcher. As shown in the film, the character is seen draping a white cloak around his body. Interestingly, that’s not how Bale envisioned himself as he had a completely different perspective for his character.
During an interview with The Wrap, the actor shared that initially, he was not sure about his appearance as Gorr. The reason behind his skepticism was that he had slight confusion regarding the character’s costume. When the director of the film Taika Waititi, gave him the Marvel comic to study the character, he was stunned after seeing his character’s appearance. Bale recalled,
“I did have a look briefly and said, ‘He’s got a G-string on. Nobody wants to see me like that.’”
Further, the actor described the character’s appearance in detail and mentioned how it was difficult for him to resonate with the character. Bale described Gorr as ‘crazy musclebound’, and at the time Bale’s body was nowhere near muscled. The actor claimed,
“I was in the middle of making another film where I was really quite skinny.”
Indeed Bale’s problem was big as the first thing that comes to sight of the audience is the character’s appearance, and he was not content with it. However, before this skepticism could have hampered his performance, his problem was solved by Waititi.
Taika Waititi brought a solution to Christian Bale’s problem
Since Christian Bale was nervous about his role in the Thor film, Taika Waititi came to his rescue and gave him a solution by creating a new look for Gorr the God Butcher. As reported by the Screen Rant, the supervillain Gorr met several alterations in the film version.
For instance, in the film, the character appeared younger and his backstory also differed from the comic book. Though Waititi and Bale, together gave the character a new version, they adhered to his complex and scary nature. Overall, the character was well portrayed Bale and it was received well by the audience.
