Netflix’s One Piece Live-Action adaptation has changed the course of the entire live-action industry by becoming one of the only successful live-action series ever. As the series ended the first season with a huge bang, fans are eagerly waiting for the next season which is bound to adapt one of the best sagas of the original anime and manga series, the Alabasta Saga.

However, the first season of the series was not all happy and filled with success. It sure had its moments of controversy and backlash to some extent which while did not pose a threat to the overall achievement of the series surely made some anime fans sad. One of the biggest controversies was the diversified cast that was involved in the series.
Although, seeing the pros of the series, all the hate and controversies were kept on the backseat, the one that recently popped out involved Nami’s sister Nojiko and her tattoos in the series, which had a meaning in the original anime and manga series.
Controversy Regarding Nojiko in One Piece Live-Action
A major point of contention during the live-action adaptation of One Piece was that fans of the original series felt that the actresses and actors did not bear a strong enough resemblance to their roles. The character that was most talked about because of this issue was Nami’s adoptive sister from Cocoyasi Village, Nojiko.

Fans initially complained that Nojiko had a different skin color in the manga and the anime which questioned the relativity of the story. In the One Piece live-action series, Nojiko is played by Chioma Umeala, which sparked controversy and although it didn’t affect the series much, it surely was not good for the story, as fans were able to point out another mistake that the creators did in the series.
In a video posted on YouTube about the topic of controversy against Nojiko in One Piece, fans pointed out the real reason why they had problems with the character in general. They cleared out that the problem was not with the skin color but actually with the tattoos Nojiko had, which had some symbolism behind them in the anime and manga series.
Anime Fans Had Problems With Nojiko’s Tattoos
In the original One Piece anime and manga, the tattoos that Nojiko got had a meaning behind them. Nojiko is shown as a strong, helpful sister in both the manga and the anime. She got her tattoos because she didn’t want Nami to feel alone in her quest to gather berries and free the village from Arlong’s control.

But in the live-action show, instead of being supportive, she hated her sister for years because she was unaware of her true plan. Therefore, the tattoos never made any sense in the One Piece live-action series. However, they were still there, making them completely irrelevant.
This upset the fans as the storyline already had a major change but the changes were not perfectly adapted in the story. Now as the series moves towards the second season, fans are hoping that if there are any changes in the story, the creators will adapt them perfectly.
