Nonetheless, although Iron Man turned Downey into a global icon, the actor feels there are two other movies that changed his career trajectory.
Apparently, during an interview with The New York Times magazine, Robert Downey Jr. mentioned there are two films in his filmography that came as major turning points in his career. Downey Jr. then cited his 2006’s flop The Shaggy Dog as one among the most important projects he has ever done.
Iron Man Isn’t Robert Downey Jr.’s Most Important Film
Although the world hails Robert Downey Jr. as MCU’s billionaire, playboy, and philanthropic Iron Man, the actor credited two other movies as his career-changing projects. Recalling his lesser-known flop movies, the Oppenheimer star attempted to shock his fans with his revelation.
Discussing with The New York Times, the actor stated how one of his career-changing projects came after his contract with Marvel ended. Wrapping up his shooting with MCU, Downey Jr. mentioned moving on to one of his most important titles, Dolittle.
“I finished the Marvel contract and then hastily went into what had all the promise of being another big, fun, well-executed potential franchise in ‘Dolittle,‘”
Recalling his 2020’s infamous Dolittle, Robert Downey Jr. stated how he appreciates that flop movie for a reason. Although his MCU projects turned the trajectory of his career, the actor believes Dolittle and another $87M flop movie gave him purpose in Hollywood.

During his discussion with The New York Times, Robert Downey Jr. mentioned how he was too excited about Dolittle, for he wanted to try different genres. Picking the particular movie from his vast filmography, Downey appeared to appreciate the opportunity from his decades-long career.
“I had some reservations. Me and my team seemed a little too excited about the deal and not quite excited enough about the merits of the execution. But at that point I was bulletproof. I was the guru of all genre movies.”
Therefore, Downey Jr. got engaged in Dolittle and further recalled another of his old classic films that turned into a $87M flop movie, The Shaggy Dog. Citing his 2006’s film as one of his most important titles, the actor stunned his fans with his preference.
“Honestly, the two most important films I’ve done in the last 25 years are ‘The Shaggy Dog,’ because that was the film that got Disney saying they would insure me. Then the second most important film was ‘Dolittle,’ because ‘Dolittleʼ was a two-and-a-half-year wound of squandered opportunity.”
