Kenneth Mitchell, known for his roles in Jericho and Captain Marvel, has passed away due to complications of ALS. His family revealed the news on X on Saturday. Mitchell was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) in August 2018 and has been bound to a wheelchair since October 2019. The actor publicized his diagnosis in February 2020.
Mitchell played multiple Klingon characters in Star Trek: Discovery, including Kol in Season 1, Kol-Sha and Tenavik in Season 2, and Aurellio in Season 3. During the third season, his character used a hoverchair as the series needed to incorporate his need for a wheelchair due to his disease.

Kenneth Mitchell will be remembered for his Star Trek roles, which the actor earlier revealed kept him inspired and gave him a purpose (via Syfy Wire). Mitchell portrayed the father of Brie Larson‘s Carol Danvers, Joseph Danvers, in the 2019 film Captain Marvel. The actor was also a guest star in several famous TV series.
Grey’s Anatomy
In the Season 2 episode, titled Break on Through, Kenneth Mitchell played a helpless husband, Wade Solomon, whose new wife Claire was admitted to the ER. The wife has an extremely aggressive rash spreading on her legs. Mitchell played the distraught role brilliantly, portraying the emotions of a man who has to choose between several treatment options for his wife, one of them being amputation.
Jericho
In the two seasons of the post-apocalyptic drama, Mitchell played Eric Green, the deputy mayor of the fictional city of Jericho. He portrayed the complex younger son character in the series, where Eric tried hard to emulate his father Johnston Green, a longtime Mayor of Jericho. The series was canceled after the first season, but a fan campaign resulted in the network bringing it back for another season.
NCIS: Los Angeles
Kenneth Mitchell was Agent Danny Gallagher in the fourth season episode of NCIS: Los Angeles, titled Red Part 1. Mitchell’s Gallagher was part of NCIS: Red Team, a team working from within two mobile units and solving crimes across several locations in America. Mitchell also appeared in the original series NCIS in a different role in its 12th season episode, Parental Guidance Suggested.
Bones
Kenneth Mitchell played Ben Carr in the episode The Pathos in the Pathogen during the eighth season of Bones. Bones and Agent Booth investigate the murder of journalist-blogger Mia Garrett. Mitchell’s Ben Carr is the fiancée of the victim in the series, who is also a blogger.
The Mentalist
During the search for a firefighter’s killer, Patrick Jane and Agent Teresa Lisbon come across the thief Tom Wilcox. Kenneth Mitchell portrayed the character who turned out to be the murderer in the end. In the episode, the character also attempts to drown Jane in the lake. He appeared in The Mentalist season 4 episode 10, titled Fugue in Red.
Criminal Minds
In the tenth episode of Season 6, What Happens at Home, the BAU travels to New Mexico where a serial killer is garroting women in a gated community. Mitchell played the serial killer Drew Jacobs in the episode.

Kenneth Mitchell’s grieving family announced his passing on X (formerly Twitter). The actor leaves behind his wife, actress Susan May Pratt, and two children, Lilah Ruby Mitchell and Kallum Porter Mitchell. The family shared that the brave actor fought the “awful challenges of ALS” for five and a half years. They shared that he managed to rise above the challenges, and lived a full and joyous life.

Mitchell publicly announced his ALS diagnosis only in 2020 in an interview with PEOPLE. He recalled the moment when he was diagnosed with the disease, sharing that it was something out of a movie scene. StarTrek.com posted a heartfelt tribute to the actor. Kenneth Mitchell’s family has asked to direct any gifts toward ALS research or his children.
