Guillermo del Toro is a fascinating filmmaker who fuses weird and fantastical concepts and gives them relatability and emotional catharsis. He also tells stories about the human condition and the dark side that they try to keep to themselves. His films such as the two Hellboy films, Blade II, Cronos, Pacific Rim, Pan’s Labyrinth, The Shape of Water, and Nightmare Alley are prime examples of his impeccable skills as a filmmaker who has a unique style and visualization. He is considered one of the best filmmakers of the current generation and his upcoming film is something to be interested about.
The maverick director recently announced that he is making his dream project based on the classic Mary Shelley novel Frankenstein. He also recently announced the cast of the film which included Oscar Isaac, Mia Goth, and Andrew Garfield. Now a new casting was revealed by the director, who turned out to be none other than two-time Oscar winner Christoph Waltz.
Christoph Waltz Joins Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein
Guillermo del Toro announced his next film Frankenstein, which will star Oscar Isaac, Andrew Garfield, and Mia Goth. The director recently screened his film Pacific Rim for its 10-year anniversary. During the Q&A session, del Toro revealed additional information about his upcoming film and made a new casting announcement. Christoph Waltz will be joining the aforementioned actors for the gothic horror. He told Collider,
“I’m doing Frankenstein. We’re working on it. We start shooting in February, and it’s a movie I have been wanting to do for 50 years since I saw the first Frankenstein. I had an epiphany, and it’s basically a movie that required a lot of growth and a lot of tools that I couldn’t have done 10 years ago. Now I’m brave or crazy enough or something, and we’re gonna tackle it. It’s Oscar Isaac, Andrew Garfield, Christoph Waltz, Mia Goth, and we’re working on it.”
This is really interesting news for fans as Waltz is a two-time Oscar Winner. The film already had powerhouse actors and now with the addition of Waltz, the possibilities and potential of this film have become more exciting. The film is sure to become a major awards contender in the future.
Guillermo del Toro Did Not Direct Pacific Rim: Uprising Due to A Missed Payment
Guillermo del Toro’s 2013 film sci-fi film Pacific Rim was a hit at the box office. It spawned a sequel called Pacific Rim: Uprising which he did not return to direct. At a recent Q&A with Collider, he revealed why he didn’t return for the sequel. He said,
“We were getting ready to do it, it was different from the first, but it had a continuation of many of the things that I was trying to do. Then what happened is—I mean, this is why life’s crazy, right?—they had to give a deposit for the stages at 5 p.m. or we would lose the stages in Toronto for many months. So, I said, ‘Don’t forget we’re gonna lose the stages,’ and five o’clock came and went, and we lost the stages. They said, ‘Well, we can shoot it in China.’ And I go, ‘What do you mean we?’ [Laughs] ‘I’ve gotta go do Shape of Water.'”
It seems the missed payment for the sound stage and the scheduling conflicts with him doing The Shape of Water prevented him from returning for the sequel. His upcoming Frankenstein film is getting a lot of hype and excitement among fans about the casting and the potential of the film. It remains to be seen whether del Toro manages to pull it off.
