However, the show’s first season finale had left the ending open for future installments, with one particular legacy character’s cameo setting up a new mystery for a potential second season. The Acolyte’s Cancellation Leaves One Master Yoda Mystery Unresolved
The Acolyte is the first Star Wars series set during the franchise’s High Republic era. Created by Leslye Headland, the series premiered on June 4, 2024, and wrapped up its first installment in July 2024. However, it received mostly negative reviews and was heavily criticized by fans online.
In August 2024, it was reported that the series would not return for a second installment. At the time, declining viewership and poor reactions were cited as the primary reason for the show’s cancellation. However, the first season finale ends on a cliffhanger where Vernestra Rwoh meets Master Yoda.
As the tweet indicates, at least some viewers were interested in the show’s potential second season answering the questions about Rwoh privately meeting Yoda, and what the latter’s role would have been in the overall storyline for the series. In the season 1 finale, Rwoh covers up the Jedi murders by framing Master Sol for the crimes.
Later, Rwoh seeks Mae’s help to find her former Padawan and Osha. As a result, fans wondered whether Rwoh would tell Yoda the truth about the crimes and/or the return of the Sith. However, whatever she told Yoda is now irrelevant in the larger scheme of things, since we will never find out the answer.
The Acolyte Creator Admitted Including the Yoda Cameo to Set Up Season 2
During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, showrunner Leslye Headland admitted that she included a cameo from Yoda in the first season finale on purpose. The creator explained that the cameo was meant to set up a larger storyline for the prospective second season.
Where does that lead? So it was a lot of: How is this going to fit into what we later see?
Headland made the above statement, implying the mystery of the conversation between Rwoh and Yoda would have been addressed in a potential second installment.
At the time, Headland revealed that she was in the dark about the possibility of the series being renewed for a second season. Moreover, a renewal was also not announced at the recent D23 Expo, where Lucasfilm shared updates about the future of the galaxy far, far away.
Ultimately, the show’s cancellation was reported by the trades in August 2024, ending the most divisive Star Wars series after just a single season. As a result, it is unlikely that fans will get answers regarding Yoda’s role during the twilight of the High Republic era and other mysteries set up by the season 1 finale.
