Thor: Love and Thunder was released in theaters a year ago, on the 6th of July 2022, to be exact, yet fans’ rage towards the movie has still not settled. Marvel Studios has produced more than 30 titles in the past, each loved by fans in their own ways. Thor 4 falls under MCU’s Phase 4, a controversial era for the studio that took place during the aftermath of the pandemic.

The smashing success of 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok convinced fans that the fourth sequel would also deliver an outstanding performance, especially with the introduction of Natalie Portman as Lady Thor and Christian Bale as Gorr the God Butcher. Unfortunately, the film became too comedic for the fans.

Chris Hemsworth Acknowledges Thor 4 Became “Too Silly

Thor: Love and Thunder was peppered with mixed reactions from fans and critics alike, many pointing out its confusing tone and comedic elements. Marvel films have been known to infuse several jokes in between serious events, and while the older movies have done it well, the humor in Thor 4 became over-the-top.

For many viewers, Thor has become more of a comedic relief than the main star of the show. The inconsistency in the tone of the narrative also contributed to its downfall. Christian Bale’s portrayal of Gorr was widely praised by viewers and considered the most epic part of the film. The seriousness of his villain role is a remarkable contrast to the movie’s overall ambiance.

Thor 4 lead star Chris Hemsworth broke his silence regarding the criticism hurled towards the film. The Australian actor told GQ:

I think we just had too much fun. It just became too silly. It’s always hard being in the center of it and having any real perspective… I love the process, it’s always a ride. But you just don’t know how people are going to respond.”

Hemsworth is currently not working on any Marvel projects and is planning to do other films outside the comic book realm. When asked if he wants to reprise the role, he would only do so if there’s a good story.
