Marc Forster’s Monster’s Ball starred Halle Berry in the lead role but it was one of the hardest roles she ever performed. Monster’s Ball was well-received by critics and fans, however, Berry’s ex-husband could not stand a few scenes.
Berry has played several challenging roles before but her appearance in the acclaimed movie has certainly pushed her and her family to the edge of dysphoria. Berry herself felt that she had to overcome several obstacles that were too hard to cross.
Halle Berry Addressed The Scene That Terrified Eric Benet
At first glance, it would seem that the desperate s*x scene between Leticia played by Halle Berry, and Thornton’s prison-guard character would be upsetting for her and her family. However, it was nowhere near having a disturbing trait compared to the scene where Leticia smacks around her obese son. For Berry and her ex-husband Eric Benet, the scene was awful.
“That was just as uncomfortable for him in a different way. He has a daughter, and I’m now her mother. To see someone abuse a child like that and to have it be me, his wife — he thought, Oh, my God, who’s this monster?” Berry told the Chicago Tribune.
But it doesn’t mean the s*x scene was any easier. Performing the s*x scene was equally difficult for Berry as it gave the actor a pretty hard time going on to performing the scene bare-breast.
Halle Berry On Monster’s Ball S*x Scene
Berry reflected on the s*x scene in Monster’s Ball saying it was unnatural. “When you’re married, and you’re in love with someone else, and you have family,” Berry said. For the actor, it’s even “more unnatural, and it’s nerve-wracking.”
“We’re not doing what it looks like we’re doing, and I think sometimes it’s hard for people to wrap their brain [around that]. There’s a roomful of people, and it’s very calculated in a way. I mean, I shot that scene with Billy Bob — the movie was only a 21-day shoot and we shot it like day 19, and I didn’t know him beforehand, so it’s a very unnatural thing to be doing.”
Berry further added that the scene was “really, like any other scene, very technical. It’s about lights, camera, action. It’s really not two people making out somewhere. It’s really not.” Regardless, the movie helped the actor to secure an Academy Award for Best Actress and many consider Berry’s performance in the movie one of the best of her career.
