A rollercoaster of emotions, Natalie Portman and Benjamin Millepied’s love story began in 2009 when the Thor: Love and Thunder actress signed on for the lead role in Black Swan. Millepied, who was responsible for training Portman and choreographing the film, was living in New York since he joined the New York City Ballet in 1995.
It was during the training sessions of Black Swan, that the connection between Portman and Millepied grew strong. Revealing how one of the most painful experiences of her career led her to Miillepied, Portman disclosed how her love story with her husband began.
How did Natalie Portman meet Benjamin Millepied while working through “extreme pain”
While filming Black Swan, Natalie Portman admitted that she went through extreme pain in order to understand her character better. As reported by the Vancouver Sun, the actress explained,
“The physical discipline really helped for the emotional side of the character, because you get a sense of the sort of monastic lifestyle that is a ballet dancer’s life. You don’t drink, you don’t go out with friends, you don’t have much food, you are constantly putting your body through extreme pain.”
However, during this particular phase of her life, Portman met her future husband. While reminiscing her first meeting with Benjamin Millepied, Portman said in a Sirius XM Town Hall interview.
“I met my husband on it, so I think I was in, like, dreamland. He was teaching me to dance. You know, one of those romantic [stories] … It was definitely exciting and fun. It was beautiful. I don’t know about instant. It was like I really got to know him and that was when it seemed like, ‘Oh this is the person.’ “
Although the duo kept their romance under wraps, the couple were frequently spotted together before confirming their relationship.

In December 2010, Portman and Millepied made two surprising announcements. The couple not only confirmed that they were engaged but also revealed that they were expecting their first child. In June 2011, they welcomed their first child, later tying the knot in August 2012.
However, despite their dreamy love story, the couple faced some serious challenges when news of Portman learning about her husband’s extramarital affair surfaced in June 2023. Although the actress did not respond to any questions surrounding the topic, sources revealed that Millepied was remorseful and working hard to mend their relationship in an attempt to keep his family intact.
After the news of their struggles in marriage, the duo were spotted attending the 2023 Women’s World Cup in Sydney. The two were accompanied by their son Aleph. Moreover, recently, in September, the couple was clicked together in Paris.
