Mark Wahlberg is known for movies such as “The Departed” and “Ted”. However, if things went just a bit differently, he would have been known for “Titanic” and Leonardo DiCaprio would have had to find his luck elsewhere.

Besides DiCaprio, many soon-to-be big names were considered for the role of Jack Dawson including Wahlberg. While auditioning for the role, his experience went beyond the typical audition setting. However, it did not go too well for him as James Cameron eventually went with DiCaprio for the role.

In a recent episode of Happy Sad Confused with Josh Horowitz, Mark Wahlberg talked about his experience while auditioning for Titanic. He discussed how he was more interested in James Cameron‘s Hummer than in the role.

He revealed that he asked Cameron for a ride in his Hummer and requested to drive the car. He also believes Cameron must have questioned Wahlberg’s focus due to his antics.

“Wasn’t really interested even in reading. I love James Cameron and I was so excited to meet James Cameron. I was like, yo, is that your Hummer outside? He said, “Yeah”. We’re supposed to have a meeting and I was like let’s go for a ride. “Can I drive”. I drove his hummer around with him and he was like “oh this kid’s not focused.”

He further disclosed that he did not even get to read the script and that Leonardo DiCaprio and Jared Leto were auditioning at the same time as he was. Despite not getting the role, Wahlberg stays thankful and believes he only got the roles he was right for.

“I didn’t even get to the script. At that point, I was walking in the door, Jared Leto was walking out. Obviously, Leo was there. It’s one of those things where I was kind of meeting for stuffs. I kind of got lucky in that the people I was working with starting to recommend me.” “I didn’t mind going in auditions and I only got the role that I think I was actually right for, which is good”

Wahlberg eventually made it big in Hollywood in multiple genres mainly Comedy, Drama, and Action.

Wahlberg had also discussed his Titanic adventures in an interview on The Late Late Show with James Corden. There, he discussed that “every actor of (his) age group was meeting James Cameron” for the role.

He also talked about how “instead of talking me into the part (Jack Dawson), I talked (James Cameron) into letting me drive the truck (Hummer)”. After Wahlberg’s response, James Corden came up with a theory to guess why he was not hired for a movie.

The theory is as simple as hilarious. It is that if Wahlberg was on the Titanic, he would have definitely made himself some space on the door beside Rose and survived.

“I would never believe that Mark Wahlberg, playing that part in Titanic, would absolutely, being the man he is, go – shift up, there is room for both of us on this door. DiCaprio, I don’t think does. Mark Wahlberg goes, slide over, we can both get on this door.” “I think James Cameron and that is why he didn’t do it (cast Mark Wahlberg)”

James Cameron eventually went with Leonardo DiCaprio for the role. While the Titanic sank in 1912, it flooded the box office records in 1997.
