The Lands Between has a few philosophies going around, and one of them lies in the belief systems surrounding life and death. The idea of a Destined Death is a complex one that has kept notions of mortality and immortality in check. However, a player has a theory that might reveal the true intentions of Destined Death.

This Elden Ring player Explores the Concept of Destined Death

The characters suffering due to Destined Death may have roots in Marika's childhood.

Elden Ring‘s Destined Death enabled death in the true sense. Meaning that when one’s not alive, they’re dead. Much like how mortality works in our world. However, Marika was known to have sealed off the Destined Death, leading a bitter way to immortality that didn’t work in everyone’s favor.

Redditor EldenRingLoreTalk may have delved a bit deeper into this concept in hopes of understanding what led to such reasoning. They managed to find depictions of a father, mother, and daughter beautifully crafted on the walls of a location in Farum Azula. It shows the storyline of the family experiencing some kind of death and the daughter being affected by it.

The user then states their assumption that this child was Marika during her childhood days, witnessing a trauma that would drastically shift her perspectives toward life and death. So much so that, in order to protect herself from this kind of grief, she’d remove the idea of death completely.

Whether or not this theory is true, it does make a bold assumption as to why Queen Marika chose to eliminate the idea of Destined Death in Elden Ring. The more you think about it, the better it humanizes the character, leading us to believe that even gods can make emotional decisions as part of a coping mechanism.

Queen Marika, Destined Death, and What It May Mean for Shadow of the Erdtree

There's a chance that the DLC will explore this concept further.

Throughout Elden Ring, The Tarnished explores many stories and characters who add to the game’s worldbuilding. As the character arc develops, a sense of solitude and unclear purpose may lead them to ask questions about immortality and why this world refuses to completely die.

This is when the idea of Destined Death makes sense and how Queen Marika herself may have wanted to keep this cycle from ending.

Unfortunately, a lot of these characters grow sick of finding themselves stuck in the midst of a version of Lands Between that doesn’t have any purpose anymore. It is almost as if The Tarnished is the only true Elden-Lord-to-be who can bring things to closure. How do they do it? Well, that’s what the multiple endings are for.

However, given this vagueness around Destined Death and the consequences it holds, it’s likely that we’ll see this philosophy take shape further as Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree takes place. In the meantime, fan theories and character lore can give us enough material to speculate over.
