In an interview with CBR, when Bruce Timm was asked why he keeps returning to work with DC characters, the artist and animator credited the vast potential of DC characters for his endless inspiration. Timm went on to say:

One of the things that’s great about the DC characters is that there are so many different ways you can take them. I am constantly amazed how flexible these characters are to the point where I can watch a Batman or Superman movie done by someone other than myself and, even though they’re doing things I would never in a million years do, I don’t go, “Batman would never do that!” Because which Batman are you talking about?”

Unlike some other superheroes who are limited to a single interpretation, DC characters are flexible. He explained this by using an approach of different versions: think of a cheerful Adam West-style Batman on one end and a darker, and then grittier Frank Miller version on the other.

This let the 63-year-old to shape the characters according to what his creative vision is, as evident in his 2021’s Batman: Soul of the Dragon movie.

It means there’s a version of Batman to suit with everyone’s tastes, spanning from light-hearted and funny to serious and dark, and even exploring sci-fi elements. So, with this vast variety, the creator always has a wealth of fresh and diverse stories to tell within the DC Universe.
