Most Shonen heroes are missing a mother, or at least one who shows up in the series. It happened with Bleach, Naruto, Jujutsu Kaisen, and countless other series in which parents are no-shows. So of course, One Piece did not escape the curse either.
While Luffy’s father, Monkey D. Dragon, is an essential part of the storyline, his mother is never seen or mentioned. Any normal person would think about their mother once or twice, but not Luffy!
This led fans to think that either Eiichiro Oda sees no value in discussing Luffy’s mom or she is such a strong driving force behind the plot that she must stay hidden until absolutely necessary.
Did Eiichiro Oda accidentally hint at Luffy’s mom in One Piece?
Chapter 1057 of One Piece contained an extra story called “Where the Wind Blows.” It featured a short story about Uta and Shanks and also showed a baby being coddled to sleep while its mother sang a lullaby. Fans speculate that the baby is Luffy, while the singing woman is his mom.
It has already been established that Luffy and Uta were childhood friends, so it only makes sense that she was present when he was a kid. Shanks often visited Luffy’s hometown, as it was his hideout.
Eiichiro Oda barely ever includes anything irrelevant in the story, so is this how he decided to soft-launch Luffy’s mom?
Will One Piece reveal Luffy’s Mom?
One of the long-standing mysteries of One Piece is Luffy’s mom. So far, we know that Luffy was born in Foosha, a province in the East Blue Sea. His father is the leader of the Revolutionary Army, Monkey D. Dragon. His mom, on the other hand, has never been introduced, and in an interview, Oda once said that he has no intention of bringing Luffy’s mom into the story.
According to the mangaka, “Luffy’s adventure began after he left his mother’s arms. I want to tell this young man’s story, so [his] mom is not part of it.” However, many fans believe that Luffy’s mom needs to be a part of Dragon’s flashback, otherwise a major part of his journey and identity will be left behind.
Even in a previous interview with SBS, he commented that Luffy’s mom was never introduced because “‘mother’ is the opposite of ‘adventure’.” This unwarranted comment did bring Oda a lot of criticism as he portrayed moms in a negative light.
However, Eiichiro Oda might stick to his word and never actually reveal who Luffy’s mom is. If she never gets an appearance, fans will have to make do with this unknown singing woman for the rest of their lives. Still, let’s hope that she is introduced in the Final Saga.
