This year has been loaded with amazing films of diverse genres, and as comic book movies continue to dominate the entertainment industry, fans will find a couple of superhero titles making it to the top list. However, only two Marvel projects made it to Ranker’s best movies of 2023.
Still a victory, though, as these two MCU installments are actually blockbusters and box office top-grossers, proving that superhero fatigue has not totally plagued the community. Surprisingly, Margot Robbie’s Barbie, which earned over a billion dollars, did not make it to the top five. Check out the list below:
1. Oppenheimer
Christopher Nolan’s epic thriller featuring a star-studded cast of the likes of Cillian Murphy and Robert Downey Jr. was voted as the best movie of the year. The story delves into the life and works of physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, also known as the father of the atomic bomb. This biopic emerged as a critical and commercial success, with an upcoming re-release this 2024.
2. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse
One of Marvel Studios and Sony Picture’s most successful animated movies, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse follows Brooklyn’s Spider-Man, Miles Morales, as he explores the multiverse. Fans attribute the triumph of the film to its exhibition of complex yet relatable characters and heartfelt storyline.
3. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3
James Gunn’s final installment in this MCU trilogy proved to be a box office hit after grossing over $845 million in global ticket sales. The fame of the franchise and the emotional plot joined forces to create another comic book masterpiece that served as a satisfying conclusion to the epic space saga.

4. John Wick: Chapter 4
Keanu Reeves’ action thriller franchise took the world by storm and wrapped fans in his exciting yet dangerous mission to exact revenge upon his enemies. The fourth installment of the film series saw the titular character find a way to take down the High Table, even if it means forging a connection with old allies as he fights a new adversary.
5. The Super Mario Bros. Movie
Nostalgia played an important role in the financial success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, but the simplicity of its story and the delightful viewing experience helped in earning the numbers. Only a handful of films managed to cross the billion-dollar mark in the post-pandemic era, and this one surprisingly delivered a stellar performance.
Other Movies That Made It To The Top 10
Even though these movies did not make it to the top five of Ranker, they are still considered huge successes because of the profit they have brought to studios as well as the critical acclaim they have received from viewers.
The honorable mentions are as follows: Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, Killers of the Flower Moon, Barbie, and Air.
It is a bit surprising to see that Greta Gerwig’s Barbie starring Margot Robbie was not voted to the top five list. Despite crossing the billion-dollar mark and the massive support from fans, it only landed the number 9 spot.
