An anonymous user on 4chan recently made a post claiming to have knowledge of an upcoming open world Superman project by Rocksteady, the developers of the popular Batman Arkham game series.

The user decided to maintain his/her anonymity so there is a possibility that the information they disclosed is false, but this is not the first time that rumors have surfaced regarding Rocksteady developing a Superman game that can rival the Batman Arkham series. If the information is to be true, then it is an expansive and ambitious effort.

The user revealed the following details:

-Unreal Engine 4
– Big open world Metropolis(larger than the map of Arkham Knight with more buildings)
– Can’t play as Clark Kent
– Main villain is Brainiac
– Nerfed Superman (TAS Levels)
– Semi-destructible environments(Similar to Arkham Knight, no buildings are toppling)
– Combat system is a mixture of the free-flow combat system introduced in the Arkham games while integrating flight into the (kind of like Dragon Ball Z where players can punch someone then zoom towards them and repeat the sequence)
– Set within the Arkhamverse
– Tons of easter eggs to Superman’s lore, and some to the events that took place in the Batman Arkham Franchise

Rocksteady and WB Montreal are also developing a joint multiplayer project which has been proven based on the multiplayer developer hirings listed on the Rocksteady site. This is a way to lay the groundwork for a Justice League game in a few years but before that they have to establish a functional way of utilizing Superman first. The title is expected to be announced some time before E3 with a trailer encouraging people to see more when E3 2018 officially commences.

As previously stated, this information should be taken with a grain of salt based on the anonymity of the source. However, if the project is indeed in development then it is one of the biggest projects the studio has worked on since Arkham City in 2011.

Rocksteady has proven it can tackle costumed crime fighters after it’s work on Batman Arkham Asylum, Batman Arkham City, and Batman Arkham Knight, which were all critical and financial successes for the United Kingdom-based studio.

If this source is true, then they are going to give Superman the same treatment as Batman which is something that the character desperately needs. While the Man of Steel has had some solid games in the past, he has generally never had the best of luck in the video game department. His reputation in gaming has been heavily troubled since 1999 after The New Adventures of Superman for the Nintendo N64 was heavily panned by critics, causing it to be dubbed as one of the worst games ever made.
