The conclusion of Season 4 of Amazon Prime’s The Boys has left fans shaking. After a slower season which saw plenty of criticism, the season finale saw a number of critical events taking place, which has set up a tasty season 5 which will see some of the major characters exchange blows.
This includes Antony Starr’s Homelander, who has never really been in a stronger position thus far. The de-factor President of the United States is out to vanquish all of his enemies and underwent a stunning Season 4 arc which included plenty of stunning moments.
This includes a finale scene in which Homelander swatted aside the new president, Steven Calhoun, who effectively handed the keys to the nation to the evil supe.
Antony Starr’s interview proves how well he understands everything The Boys’ Homelander stands for
Well, apart from Karl Urban’s Billy Butcher, if there is one character who has consistently been in the spotlight, it is Homelander. The psychotic, evil, and disturbed antagonist of the series has shown off his glorious characteristics throughout the show, even if things took a turn for the worse in Season 4.
Starr’s portayal of the character has led to consistent calls from fans for an Emmy, and that is majorly down to how well he understands what his character stands for. That was also evident in his recent interview, as he revealed how Homelander’s season finale speech in itself was a result of his improvisation: (via Vulture)
Originally, I was just standing in the background saying nothing. I’m guessing the camera would have pushed past Calhoun onto me just smiling with satisfaction. But my instinct was Calhoun is a bought-and-paid-for puppet, and Homelander’s ego is gonna demand that he is front and center. I said to Eric, “Mate, it’s so in character for Homie to shuffle that guy out of the way and go, ‘Here’s what’s really going to happen.’”
Antony Starr revealed that creator Eric Kripke effectively ran with his idea, as the actor explained how he wanted Homelander’s fascism to be evident:
I needed to project that Homelander the fascist, the narcissist, the villain of the piece, is winning, has won. It’s a setup for the Boys to claw back and fight as we go into season five. The show is ultimately about vigilantes trying to take down the evil — what is it in Star Wars? Who are they?
Needless to say, the decision did not just pay off, it perfectly complemented what Homelander is.
Season 5 set to feature The Boys’ major characters in all their elements
There are plenty of reasons why fans should be extremely excited about what Season 5 will entail. Before that, Season 2 of Gen V will result in further escalation of the major conflict at play, which has now come to a head. Hughie, Mother’s Milk, and Kimiko have all been taken in by Homelander’s army, while Butcher looks set to continue his lone-rebel activities.
Starlight has rediscovered the extent of her powers, while Kimiko has rediscovered her vocal chords. The Boys seem to be running out of allies, even though the potential return of Jensen Ackles’ Soldier Boy might as yet have a huge impact. Regardless, as far as Butcher and Homelander are concerned, the two’s deepest, goriest characteristics are set to be in full glory in whatever is left of the series.
Butcher is in a race against time as he also deals with his humungous brain tumor, and seems to have completely committed to the agenda of total supe destruction. That was seemingly triggered by the gory way in which Ryan murdered Mallory. For Homelander, the season’s climax resulted in surprising success.
He was convinced that the concluding events, especially after the murder of Victoria Neuman, left him at a disadvantage. However, with Sister Sage on his side, things quickly took a turn, and Homelander now simply has no need to hold back.
Whatever occurs in Season 5, fans can rest assured that it is going to be a gloriously chaotic ride filled with gore, and plenty of stunning moments.
