With the season of award ceremonies leading to The Oscars, the grandest stage of them all, the competition is fierce even for a nomination in one of the several categories that are recognized for commemoration. And seeing as just how visually stunning James Gunn’s recent directorial Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was, people were hoping it would take home one of these prestigious awards.

But much to everyone’s surprise, the list of nominees for the Best Makeup and Hairstyling category has no mention of the film anywhere. This has led the fans to believe that this is yet another blatant disregard by The Academy of the film for being a comic book adaptation, only bolstered by the fact that the film had broken a record for the most prosthetics used in Hollywood.

2023 wasn’t the year where comic book films dominated either the box office or the critical acclaim charts, yet despite that trend, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 broke that streak where other MCU projects failed. This film was also the last project that James Gunn collaborated with Marvel Studios on before assuming his role as co-CEO of DC Studios.

But these expectations weren’t the only things that were broken by the film. It was stated that this MCU film also broke the record for using the most prosthetics on its characters in Hollywood’s history with more than 20,000 being employed in the production. Despite this fact being public, the project did not even receive a nomination for the Best Makeup and Hairstyling category by The Oscars.

This is considered to be one of the biggest letdowns in this list of nominees by the fans as the visual aspect of the characters in Gunn’s directorial was far more extraordinary and graphic than the others on the list. Many have come forward to even claim that the only reason why the film was taken out of the race was because it was an MCU film.

While this category may have snubbed the chance for a film in one area, the film did get nominated for the Best Visual Effects category by The Oscars.

The intricacies, the artistic expression of these make-ups, and how they enhanced the visually graphical aspect of the film was enhanced by them was truly spectacular.
