Palworld has only been around for a while and has already managed to break many records. The game’s successful launch made it surpass giants like Counter-Strike 2 and become the second most-played game of all time on Steam. Well, this is definitely something, and all of these happened under the shadow of copyright claims.

The game still maintains an impressive player count, but it seems unlikely to surpass PUBG‘s all-time record of 3.2 million. So, we might have to wait until GTA 6, which shook the gaming world by being introduced suddenly in the past months.

Palworld Couldn’t Make It, But GTA 6 Could Break PUBG’s Record

Palworld is still incredibly popular.
The title is still incredibly popular.

The game’s debut was quite impressive. It garnered one million concurrent players in a pretty short time. As its popularity continued to grow, it surpassed 2 million on January 27, making it the second most-played game of all time on Steam.

The Pokémon Company’s announcement that it was reviewing the title for potential copyright violations may have had an impact, but the game couldn’t reach those numbers again. This once again secured PUBG‘s all-time record of 3.2 million.

The game’s failure to break PUBG‘s record brings to mind what GTA 6 could achieve. The game’s first trailer was released in December 2023 and shook the gaming world by receiving 172 million views in total. Such a big-budget game may break the record held by PUBG, which introduced the Battle Royale concept to gamers.

It Is Now the Biggest 3rd Party Game Pass Launch Ever

Palworld may not have broken the Steam record, but Xbox is a different story.

Many companies refrain from releasing their games on subscription platforms like Game Pass on the first day, fearing it may harm sales. However, this wasn’t the case for the Pokemon-inspired game, as Game Pass subscribers had access to it from day one.

The game has been played by more than 7 million players on Xbox, making it the biggest third-party launch in Game Pass history. It sold 12 million copies on Steam, reaching a total of 19 million players.

Pocketpair CEO Takuro Mizobe said to Xbox Wire:

The response from fans has been tremendous and it’s incredible to see the millions of players around the world enjoying the game. This is just the beginning for us and Palworld, and the feedback we’re gathering while in Game Preview will allow us to continue to improve the experience for Pal Tamers across all platforms.

Finally, there is no new statement regarding The Pokémon Company’s copyright infringement investigation. It appears that this process will be further prolonged as some people on social media continue to share posts showing the similarities between the ”Pals” in the game and Pokémon.
