Palworld is the Second Game in History to Hit Lofty Steam Record – Can You Name the First?

Hint: it's not a Valve Title.

Palworld continues to break records on Steam. But there's still one achievement it has yet to claim.

SUMMARY

  • Palworld continues to sell millions of copies on Steam.
  • While it hold the most players currently and the 24 Hour Peak, it doesn't have the All-Time Peak.
  • Many games have peaked over 1 million players on Steam but only one has hit over 3 million.

Palworld has been smashing through its own sales records over and over again. The project by Pocketpair went from selling 2 million copies in 24 hours to over 8 million in less than a week.

According to SteamDB, Palworld is currently the most played game on Steam with 1,459,685 players. With Valve titles like Counter-Strike 2 (813,871) and Dota 2 (608,185) following it, Palworld has set an unreal precedent compared to other Early Access games.

The 24 hour peak is also similar with Palworld’s 2,033,118 players on top and Counter-Strike 2 and Dota 2 being the runner-ups. However, there is one statistic Palworld has yet to claim from the Steam database: all-time peak.

This record is not held by Dota 2/Counter-Strike 2 nor other big sellers of 2023 like Baldur’s Gate 3 and Cyberpunk 2077. Instead, it’s PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS.

The Highest Peak of All Steam Games – Did You Know?

While Palworld awaits to take over the All-Time Peak on Steam, PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS is #1

PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS continues to have the all-time highest number of players on a Steam game. While Palworld is gunning for that achievement, with record breaking sales constantly, how did PUBG achieve this?

The year is 2013. A new mod for multiplayer survival game, DayZ, was launched by someone called “PlayerUnknown.” This mod became so popular, PlayerUnknown eventually created his own title, first called PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds before renaming it to PUBG: Battlegrounds

PUBG was the first massive multiplayer battle royale game that took off. Others in the genre like Fortnite and Apex Legends would come into popularity later on but at the time, PUBG was unique. It gave many players their first ever battle royale experience and because of that, everyone wanted to play it.

It was in Early Access throughout 2017. When PUBG finally launched on December 21 of that year, it continued to draw in players. The battle royale title reached the all-time peak on Steam a month later, in January 2018, with 3,257,248 players.

When Will Palworld Surpass PUBG?

How long until Palworld takes over PUBG? It might be sooner rather than later.

It’s been six years since PUBG has reached that peak. Nowadays, people still play the infamous battle royale which currently has 264,512 players online. Palworld is not even a month old yet but it’s only a matter of time for the “Pokémon with guns” video game to break the record.

It currently holds the current and 24 hour peak on SteamDB. If Palworld continues to sell well and players happen to be online simultaneously, it will shatter PUBG’s 3 million player record easily.

By how many players, it could be in the couple hundred thousand or over a million based on their sales records. Palworld’s 24 hour peak of 2,033,118 players should be telling that 3 million is around the corner.

But who knows, maybe the traction for Palworld will end sooner than expected. While the hype for it is extremely high at the moment, that can all come crashing down if Pocketpair doesn’t keep players engaged with new Pals, gameplay changes, etc.

There seems to be no slowing down for Palworld’s success, so don’t be surprised when Palworld becomes the highest played game on Steam of all-time.
