Although an exact release date for the game has still not been revealed officially, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door will definitely come out sometime next year, in 2024. The footage shown at Nintendo Direct September 2023 looks absolutely stunning because the paper and cardboard art design from the original game seems to be making a beautiful comeback, holding up quite nicely even 19 years later.

Of course, it would not really be a remaster if it did not have significant graphical tweaks and upgrades so that it looks, feels, and plays much smoother with the technical power of the Nintendo Switch, and fortunately, the enhancements are pretty evident.

In fact, the characters in the Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door trailer shown at the September 2023 edition of Nintendo Direct look remarkable because their designs combine the old-school cardboard cutout feel from the original with modern-day graphics, breathing fresh new life into them. Moreover, it seems that the remastered version of the game will stay true to the one released back in 2004.

This faithfulness to the source material will definitely be a trip down memory lane for old-school gamers, as many of the iconic aspects and memorable moments from the GameCube version are coming back in high-definition glory.

The Nintendo Direct September 2023 edition revealed a new trailer for Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, with gorgeous visuals and all of the iconic Mario characters making an appearance. The trailer starts off with Luigi bringing Mario a letter from Princess Peach, in which she basically orders him to meet her at Rogueport.

As Mario sets off on his journey, he comes across Goombella, “a junior at the University of Goom,” and it looks like she will be joining our favorite plumber across multiple levels in the story.

The main quest in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door revolves around taking “the seven Crystal Stars” to the titular location in hopes of finding “the treasure of yore.” The subsequent shots are of Mario utilizing his paper form to its full extent, shimmying through walls and turning into an actual paper plane to get across to the next platform. The game also promises plenty of boss battles, including one with Hooktail and a giant octopus.

Of course, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door would be incomplete without an appearance by Mario’s arch-nemesis, Bowser, and the first word he says in the trailer is, fittingly, “lunkhead.” You can watch the Nintendo Direct September 2023 trailer for the upcoming remastered game here.
